I'm torn

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2003
We have lived here since July and it has been a continual up and down roller coaster. My husband and I love many things about the apartment but are also frustrated with a few. I'll start with the good. We have found the Maintenance to be EXTREEMLY responsive, even coming from home on a Saturday afternoon to address a problem and our neighbors are also very nice although we don't converse much. The grounds are beautiful and they are always "improving" something. My husband regularly uses the fitness center and enjoys its wide variety of machines and the ability to get to know our neighbors. The guarded entrances are very good. We have had two out of town guests come through and they were bother given almost second degree questioning before being allowed in. I have found the atmosphere of the land to be relaxing and calming, ponds, ducks, waterfalls, and the wildlife! I never saw a Groundhog or a Skunk so close before I moved here! It truly is like living in a secluded forest away from the city. We love the convenience of the private shopping entrance and the ability to broaden our horizons and our human compassion by learning about new cultures. In comparing square footage for price this apartment seemed like a good deal. There have been a few drawbacks however. Ever since we moved in we have had a problem with something. First we had Carpenter Ants, which if you do not know will destroy a building. Those took three weeks to have treated and I think the cold killed them more then the spray. There are "things" living in the walls that we can hear scratch and scurry around. There is a leak downstairs that if it rains a substantial amount the entrance floor has a large puddle in front of the step. We have been having toilet leakage problems for over a month now (although they come out immediately to address it, they just can't get it fixed quite right). When the windows were replaced the workmen left broken glass all over the floor in the second bedroom. I stepped on a piece and found at least 5 large, VERY sharp other pieces. I have a cat that sleeps in that room and would have been VERY upset had he or one of us would have been cut. No one even left a note that there was broken glass. The walls and ceilings are said to be thick, but if someone is being even a little more then unusually loud we can hear it-our crystal has even rattled. The walls are so thin that I can hear my neighbor's morning "bathroom" rituals, which is a bit unwanted.
There are good and bad things everywhere. What it comes down to is that everyone's experience is going to be different. There is no Utopian apartment complex, what one-person loves another person is going to hate. The one thing that I am most grateful for is a roof over my head that keeps me dry and not having to pay out of my pocket someone else to come fix all these things. All I do is pick up the phone. If I owned a house and I had Carpenter Ants and toilet problems not only would I have to pay a mortgage (which could easily be our rent cost if not more around here) but I would also have to pay an exterminator and a plumber. Again, like I said, not everyone is going to have the same experience at one place. We are all made up of different likes and dislikes and one person's experience is going to be totally different from another persons, that's what gives us individuality. Beyond that we all have flaws, a company does too, so why do we judge AIMCO harder then we judge ourselves, because we pay them' Well then how do our flaws inconvenience others if we have feel that the apartment complex has inconvenienced us'
I had come on here to complain a bit about the apartment, but in looking at what I do have here I have to say that I am very happy. I would rather have to wait a few days to get a toilet fixed then wonder where I am going to sleep. In conclusion I am simply thankful that we can afford an apartment, and a nice one at that, when so many people in this world are having trouble affording their next meal and wondering if they will even have a roof over their heads. I am sure that there are many people that would give everything they possess to have a place like this, even with its flaws because it is better then what they have now.
