I moved here because I am attending UMDNJ in Newark (and who wants to live there'') It seemed like a nice, quiet, safe neighborhood, but...
FOUNDATION:
Within two months, our ceilings started to leak water... leading to the biggest problem we had, our bathroom ceiling caved in!!! Which took maintenace more than a month to fix and only after I had to call and pester them every other day. We still constantly have leaky cracks and holes under the windows, which they refuse the fix, claiming that it's from the apartment "settling".
SAFETY:
This development looks safe, but after living there for a few months, I'm scared to walk to and sleep in my apt. There is dim and inadequate lighting. I learned that I can break into my own apartment through the windows. Also, I believe that the chain lock on the door is just for looks. I can stick my arm in the door and just unlock it myself.
INSECTS:
And I'm forgetting to mention all the spiders, roaches, ants, silver fish, and many many more gross insects that infest our apartment. I had to request the exterminator to come at least once a month (which I don't even thnk they did anything because out of the 4 times I requested, only once did they come inside to spray around).
HEATING/AC:
And I think I've read from everyone who has lived here has complained about the heating. Which, I will add. I didn't think it was going to be that bad when i read the reviews here. However, everything that has been said is TRUE. We sweat to death in the winter, having to wear shorts and tank tops with the windows wide open just to try to balance out the heat, which we have no control over. But the ironic thing is that when we open the windows, spiders come in... So, either we live in a sweat box with no insects or "try" to be comfortable with spiders all over the place.
PARKING:
The parking is okay, if you have your own garage, which we did. However, if you want to park on the street after 8pm, forget about it. The street parking isn't very safe either as another tenant had their car stolen on their street at about 7pm on a Sat. (Which the management did nothing to warm or adivse their other tenants of such occurances).
NOISE:
Are the walls made of paper'' I can hear EVERYTHING that goes on on both apartments on each side of ours.
MANAGEMENT:
Who taught them how to run an apartment complex'' They are terrible at returning calls or trying to work through your problems. And there are enough problems to go around... They seem nice on the phone, but the second you start complaining, they get rude and defensive. I have had to followed up MANY times on complaints that we've had and it takes months for them to respond to them.

If you plan on moving into this area for a long time, LOOK ELSEWHERE for housing.
