Decent, but wouldn't rent again
From: drawzDate posted: 11/10/2004
Years at this apartment: 1998 - 2002
My girlfriend and I lived in these apartments for four years. It seems like my praises and gripes are similar to everyone else who posted here.
Pros:
Area - We were close to Philadelphia, main street Haddonfield, and the train station. There was a park across the street. Watch out where you park, though. The trees aren't maintained and they can seep sap on your car, which can permenantly damage the paint.
Price - The apartments are reasonably priced.
Neighbors - My neighbors were all nice people who had lived there for a few years.
Lease terms - We moved to a month-to-month lease after a year. Be careful though: you have to renew the month-to-month or you'll revert back to a yearly lease. We had some confusion with this when we tried to move out. We were switched back to a yearly lease without knowing it. But management was ultimately very accomodating when we explained out situation and let us move out wihtout penalty.
Cons:
Size - The apartments were small. We quickly outgrew the space.
Noise - I know noise is always a problem with apartments, but we could hear the person across the hall watching television, and I don't think it was ever that loud. Not complaining about noisy neighbors, but I'm saying the soundproofing was pretty shoody. We had a jazz musician who lived upstairs and practiced his guitar almost every night.
Maintenance - Terrible. The paint in our bathtub was chipped when we moved in. It took them over two years and four tries to finally paint it correctly. They kept painting it without properly stripping the old paint, so the new coat would chip and come off in sheets. The paint then clogged the tub repeatedly and stuck to us as we were showering. They were slow fixing several other things as well. The lightbulb outside our enterance was out for months, despite several phone calls about it. They had problems w/ the pipes twice, resulting in sewage coming out of our toilet and flooding the bathroom. The doorbell was hit and miss. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.
Crawlspace - The crawlspace under the building is supposed to be boarded off, but ours was open for months. Animals started living under there. Maintenance finally boarded it up with plywood...and left a family of cats under there! We could hear them meowing in the middle of the night, and I got into an argument with someone from maintenance when they caught me the next morning with a crowbar taking the plywood off to get the animals out. Not only is that cruel to the animals, imagine what the apartment would smell like with a bunch of dead animals rotting underneath'
Bugs - We had a problem with some sort of water bug. I called maintenance several times but they never took care of this problem. The apartments are across the street from a lake. There were also reports on the news of serious mold problems caused by a damp enviornment. We had some problems with mold accumulating on the walls.
Electric heat - I'll never rent a place with electric heat again. Our electric bill during big snowstorms in the winter would sometimes top $250 a month for a small 2-bedroom place.
