former tenant

I was a tenant of Tenby Chase apartments, and my husband and I DID move out (in response to "it is a nice place to live" 3/24). We had unbelievable mold build-up in our basement and constant flooding that seeped in through the walls and basement window. Nothing was done to fix the problem. I was in tears every time it rained because I knew what I would face when I came home...I mean every time it rained.
The best part is how they attempted to fix it. We finally contacted them legally and Al, who was the head of maintenance for the company or something to that effect, came out, took pictures, and wrote that we needed immediate attention.
Well, they cleaned our gutters, it rained, we flooded, we complained. Then, they, this is the best, threw mounds of dirt in front of our place. I mean a small mountain covering our roses and all. Needless to say, it rained, we flooded, had mud all over our sidewalk, we complained. Then, they came out and put drylock on our basement walls. Oh my! I have never been high until then. It was fun until we couldn't sleep and became ill. Those fumes lasted for days. My poor kitten was like a canary they used to send into the coal mine. We contemplated getting a hotel room, but just stayed out as much as possible. I took the animals to my parents. We left the windows open but it was 90 degrees. It was awful. By the way it still flooded.
The carpets were not replaced and the mold was growing on the paneling in the basement. We wrote letters of complaints, took pictures, and called the office constantly. Management did give us one month free rent as long as we signed papers agreeing that this would compensate for the lost furniture and ruined items. We did but included a clause stating the problems would be fixed. The problems weren't fixed and we just left.
In addition, we signed a lease that included an option to have our yellow kitchen updated. "The Early Bird Special" A year went by, many phone calls, many "you're next on the list", and yet no new kitchen.
I suppose I could've pursued legal action, but we just wanted to put it behind us. We just wanted to move into a new house and forget all of the constant dissappointments. I know we would've had a case because of the paperwork I kept and the contact made by the state, but what would it accomplish'
The most disgusting thing that happened (besides the time another tenant backed up a toilet and raw sewage leaked all over my basement) was when we were INFESTED with mice. I started to hear the pitter-patter of little feet in the drop ceiling of our basement. We kept a computer down there, so I was always doing work. We kept the computer on milk crates because of the water. Anyway, I looked up in the ceiling and found their fecal matter. We bought traps and contacted the office. A week or so went by. We checked the traps about 2 times. 3 of 4 traps were full each time. I finally bought a cat, which management did not know. She didn't do much good though. One day I checked under my stove. I am getting sick just thinking about it. There was s@#$ everywhere! Sorry, but that was my reaction. I finally called the office enraged. They finally sent someone out, a professional to take care of it. Previously, we had been told to leave a dead mouse in a trap to scare the others, and a maintenance worker would be out to clean up the ones we caught.
After the professional did whatever he did, they finally came out to cover our basement window with a shield. He instructed they do so and I followed them around one day until they came over. The mice did stop eventually and now I have a cat with bragging rights of one dead mouse.
YUCK!!!
We had a 2-story with a basement at $1242 a month and since it was going to increase the next lease, what was the point of resigning.
All of the people in our section of the complex left but one. They don't have much choice.
The new apartments did look decent, but why were the formal tenants just ignored. It was a very frustrating experience. It makes for good story-telling...maybe one day I will write in with my sink hole story or the spider story.
