management sucks

tried to tow my car without notice, wrote a falsified document stating that they gave notice at 7:30am when at 8:00am the notice was not on the car. Came to tow it at 8:30am, luckily i was there to stop them

Towing for reasons that were not listed in the house rules, said my car was a commercial vehicle b/c it has a plow (it doesn't not say a company name on the side or have commercial plates). I just bought the car and planned to sell the plow, but the rental company could not wait 5 mins of it being parked there before they called a towing company.

Rental company did not call me, eventhough i had spoke to them 2 days before and and they have my cell number (i made sure they had it when i called) and knew the car was mine.

I think that maintenance/management has a towing company friend who was waiting to make some cash and they're running a scam ($200 a pop for towing cars!).

House rules used to be posted on the website (although they have not been updated since 2003) but they have now been taken down. the house rules did state you could not have a commercial vehicle parked on the premises, but they seem to be using the term very loosely (if i run a newspaper route, should i have to park elsewhere'). House rules run from normal to ridiculous: you're not allowed to wash your car, you can't watch loud TV after 8pm, etc

On one occasion maintenance just came in, no knock (i don't think they knew we were there) to check on the apartment. According to NJ state law they have to give you 24hours notice before entering the premises unless it is an emergency--this was no emergency.

A different occasion they slipped a notice under my door that said they were "coming to inspect the apartment" but didn't say for what, since i was at work all day and did not come home until after 5pm i could not call and find out what this was about. I re-read the letter many times, and was worried that someone was coming to case my apartment for a later burglary, the letter was very clear about how I didnt' need to be present for the inspection. Well I took the next morning off and it turned out they were inspecting for bed-bugs but didn't want to tell anyone about it. Again i don't consider a letter stuck under my door at any time between 8am-8pm a full 24hour notice before 8am the next day.

From the impression i get, most of the management does not know NJ state law, arbitrarily does things and assumes that most of the lower/working class tenants don't know their rights. If you want to rent here, make it known to them that you know your rights, and you will take them to court if they violate them (civil court only cost $15, you can represent yourself in front of a judge).

While my landlord has been great (i rent from an individual, not the northgate tenants association) the unprofessional behavior of the staff/management has ruined any of the good things about the orchard for me.
