I'M MOVING OUT

From: -Anonymous-
Date posted: 3/7/2003
Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2003

I have lived in Eaton Crest Apartment for 3 years now. At first, I loved the convenience of the location (it's very close to parkway exit and the monmouth mall, all grocery stores are within 2-3 miles drive) and the apartment did look good.

but when it comes to leasing terms, the management is not flexible. In an economy like this, they still require one year lease renewal, and the panelty of breaking the lease in case you have to is rediculous: you will be held responsible for all rent if the apartment doesn't get rent out after you leave, up to the lease expire date. So, basically if I move out 3 months into the middle of the lease, and they couldn't find another tenant (I'm pretty sure they cannot, since there are plenty of empty ones in the complex, they will rent those empty ones out first), I will end up paying 9 month extra rent for nothing.

I didn't have a problem with the leasing term before, since my job condition was stable at the time and they sometimes give you until the last day of your lease to decide if you want to move or not. But things have changed this year. I may need to relocate to other places if I get laid off, and this year Eaton Crest asks for 75 day advance notice whether you want to renew or not. When I asked them for more grace period, they changed it to 60 day advance notice! And when I asked them if I can extend for one month since I may need some extra time to do the apartment search (keep in mind I asked them one month before my lease expires) and the answer I got was no. And if I don't move out by the end of lease' According to them, I'd have to pay double the rent!! How crazy is that stupid policy'

I have decided that this month (when my current lease expires) is going to be my last month at Eaton Crest. I've had enough with them. It took them months to fix the light by the mailbox, and I had to call them douzens of times to get my bathtub resurfaced (which was done almost half a year after I reported the original problem), and my doorbell is still not working (I reported this problem, again, about half a year ago). They keep raising the rent even for renewals in today's market, and yet the property is not getting any necessary attention. For instance, the big snowstorm we got a couple of weeks ago, the snow plowing didn't get started until 3 days after. Basically everyone was digging a path out from front door and from parking lot ourselves.

If you have a choice, don't move into Eaton Crest. This is from someone who's been there for 3 years and not happy about them at all.
