Move-Out Procedures are Meant to Wear You Down and Take Your Money

My wife and I moved out of this apartment community about a month ago and preparation for the move, I asked management to walk my apartment with me to come to an agreement as to what charges I would be assessed (e.g., carpet stains). We agreed on a weekday morning time around 8:30 (they will not walk through your apt on weekends when its more convenient, only between 8:30 and 5PM weekdays so you have to arrange for time off from work.). I had originally spoken with the maintenance supervisor to arrange that he be the one to walk the apt, since it was up to him to approve the charges. He agreed to be there. Instead, one of his maint staff arrived. We walked through the apt for 20 minutes and we agreed upon what was going to be charged. However, typical of the incompetence of the mgt at this community, when I called the super a few days later to confirm what had been discussed with his staff he overrode the staff's decision and I had to schedule another walk-thru with him. I was thoroughly pissed off and demanded to know why he did not show up the first time as was agreed. He said, "I was on vacation!" That is, he took a day off on the day he agreed to walk my apartmentt. I again had to arrange to be late for work to accommodate his schedule. Why did this happen' The maint super essentially runs the property and there are no checks on his authority. The property manager is weak and cannot make decisions or help residnents in situations like this. Residents are an incovenience to them. In addition to my having to have the carpet steemed cleaned, which is completely reasonable, the property insisted that I also spackle and paint the walls (they at least provided the paint, god willing). THIS IS THEIR JOB, not that of the resident. I complied becuase I wanted my deposit back and they use whatever reason they can to keep it. Avalon Communities is simply an overbloated corporation with inept and amature staff at the healm. Please do not give them your money.

After much hand-ringing and confusion after we moved out, I received my net deposit back. Was it worh it' Avalon hopes it wasn't.
