Good/Bad/Mediocre livin' on the cheap in the boondocks

Hey--I remember this place! It served me well for about 4 years, when I commuted to a job in central NJ. I can't really say I'd "recommend" this place in good conscience, but it wasn't the worst on the planet, either. Here are the good and bad points, to be fair:

Good: Affordable rent for NJ. Sure, it's just outside of Hackettstown--not a lot going on up in that area, that's for sure!--but if you work within 30-45 minutes away and don't mind putting miles on your car, this might be an affordable alternative to other apartments. Also, in the "old" section of the complex, the heat/hot water are included in your rent.

The "new" section has apartments which are a little more expensive and a little nicer, with a couple of additional amenities, but basically the same designs. All had pretty good closet space. Some of the apartments have nice views...some not so hot. Parking was never a problem. Snow removal was actually quite good, too. Convenient to adjacent shopping--I left the area just prior to the new shopping center being built. Convenient to hiking and outdoor stuff like horseback riding. Great places to hike and bike are very close by.

Had some friendly neighbors--folks of all ages and stripes. No problems there. Hackettstown and Mansfield Townships are not the most sophisticated communities when you're used to any major metro area; but there were some very nice people around. The local police in Mansfield were very professional yet easygoing. Local merchants were totally cool. It wasn't quite Mayberry RFD, but it was a fun slice of small town which is disappearing all too quickly around NJ.

Now, the bad: The kitchen was being remodeled prior to my moving in. They had weeks to finish the kitchen AND the new bathroom which was promised (albeit verbally--get it in writing, folks), and upon move-in the kitchen was barely done and the bathroom was still a piece of crud, and I was pretty much stuck with it for the remainder of my stay. I could've been more savvy about the whole thing, but it was a "learning experience"--but I still couldn't shake the feeling that I had been taken advantage of by the rental agent. The fixtures in the new kitchen were a bit sub-par, but mostly it was the incredibly shoddy installation and workmanship which left me fuming. Even though I'm a klutz, I was able to fix their idiotic mistakes myself and make the joint livable. The maintenance folks had their heads firmly up their arses, methinks. The ONE thing they did well was snow removal, and that's about it. Repairs were addressed within a reasonable amount of time, but weren't always done correctly. These guys wouldn't know quality if it smacked them with a 2x4...or, to be fair: if they knew anything about quality repairs and workmanship, they made it a point to not practice it at Mansfield Village--at least not with any consistancy.

Noise: The walls are kinda thin. Goes with the territory. Not the worst, but could be better.

Pests: No shortage of those silver-fishy, centipede-like things running all over late at night. Swatting those messy creatures became routine and unpleasant. Absolutely no roaches or mice to be found anywhere, though. Canadian Geese often took up residence...a mixed bag of cute offspring and a ton of poop.

If you need to live on the cheap, this place is ok, but you get what you pay for. Make time to look around the area and see what else is available--there are some better options which are slightly more expensive, but probably are worth it.
