If you have another choice, run with it

This place is not worth the money. We lived in building 776, so much of this has to do specifically with that building.

For the bulk of my stay, maintenance was shoddy and very difficult to get a hold of. We went four days without a toilet because the maintenance "emergency" line wasn't being manned by the on-call maintenance man. While renovating the apartment above us, they forgot to turn off the water, so we had water soaking our bathroom carpet and running down the bathroom walls. It took us 6 days of stinking mildew to get the carpet replaced. The new maintenance personnel seem to be promising, with the exception of the water incident, but it was too late for me to make any use of them - we had made up our minds to get out while we could.

The outer walls are concrete, which works wonderfully for keeping the sound down, but not so well for heating the apartment. The windows are VERY drafty - you can feel the wind blowing in, and they let the A/C out in the summer. In addition, the electric furnaces are old and don't work too well, so you should expect to pay upward of $300.00 / month for electricity during the winter months. The second year we were there, we had to keep the thermostat at 60 degrees to keep our electricity bills around $200.00. The spring and fall months run about $50-60 / month, but the summer months see another spike to around $200 / month.

The laundry facilities are horrendous. The washers and dryers are in a small room in the basement. The room is very damp and there are no security cameras, so wash at your own risk.

The basement storage area is very heavily treated with pesticide / bug-killer, so don't store anything of value that you don't want to stink like that. It is also very, very damp and portions of it flood.

The elevators are down, on average, once a week. This wouldn't be a problem if there was a stairway entrance in the lobby, but you have to walk outside to get to the stairs. Also, god forbid you have to do laundry when the elevators are down. The only way to get down into the basement is to walk down a very narrow, poorly lit stairway at the front of the building (which is also poorly lit). My suggestion - don't do it at night if the elevators are down.

The area is generally pretty loud, mostly because of the very draft windows. You can hear everything that goes on outside and around you. We lived next to a couple who made a living fighting with each other - it wasn't pleasant.

I would have moved out after the first winter I was there, but it wasn't feasible. I would recommend skipping on this place unless you have no other options.
