I've been in Dixon Mills for two years, and am about to renew my lease again.
I have a huge studio apartment for less than market rent -- space that would cost twice as much in Hoboken and at least a third more on the Jersey City waterfront. I've also got a parking spot in a private lot with barbed wire topping the fences. (Stay away from the lot nearest the security booth; there's no fence! No WONDER those cars get broken into!)
I have had several maintenance problems with my apartment -- creaky dishwasher, water leaking from the apartment upstairs, leaking windows -- but Management has been very receptive. My dishwasher was replaced, and the water was cleaned up the same day (on a Saturday afternoon!) and the stained ceiling tiles replaced. The shuttle bus is also quite convenient for those with a 9-5 schedule.
It's still Jersey City, but the neighborhood here is no worse than near the other major developments -- and Dixon Mills actually HAS a neighborhood, unlike Newport. Pathmark is two blocks away, and Exit 14-C of the New Jersey Turnpike is practically around the corner.
Get over the fear and come visit!
