As a native New Yorker, I was at first skeptical about renting in New Jersey. What I didn t realize was how close in proximity Newport is to the city. I used to rent privately on Mott Street, in a 6 story walk-up, and for the same rent, I m currently in a 2 Bedroom luxury rental, with a near identical commute time. The amenities are great, the management is wonderful, and it's an overall great place to live.

How is miss the skeptics that would never consider living in Jersey City... their ignorance meant bliss for us locals who enjoyed our secret little inexpensive enclave for decades. We loved JC because it had it's own vibe, it never pretended to be or ever aspired to be NYC's last borough... Not long ago it was affordable and quaint, not pretentious or hurried. the norm was quiet and peaceful (i'd hear crickets chipring at night in my backyard, feral cats roamed and kept it mice & rat free, exotic birds came to feed year round, if you listened carefully you'd hear Con-rail trains out by Liberty st. Park@ the turnpike creeping along during late hours- very soothing) the view was better (no hideous, soulless glass towers clogging up the waterfront and slapdash construction peppering downtown, it used to feel spacious, mellow and easy going (hence the nickname "Chilltown") the locals were mostly cool, it had a sense of community and respect for history, the few cars around didn't zoom down every little street causing accidents or bullying pedestrians, the PATH wasn't packed all hours everyday with unhappy zombie suburbanites and rude fashionistas... Now that the recessions levelling things back to normalcy perhaps those who don't belong (because deep down they don't care about this city) will totter along elsewhere. Some days i see the signs the exodus has already begun... Jersey City, a victim of over-exploited success... "what could have been" if we controlled the growth instead of letting it go haywire. All the fuss just to please developers and real estate agent sharks who'd swoop in just to make quick profits then run when tough times returned.
