It?s ok, but the neighborhood and parking sucks

I had a huge, spacious two bedroom. My balcony, master bedroom and living room had awesome views of Manhattan, but after 9/11, it just wasn?t the same. My guest bedroom had breathtaking views of both the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan.

I loved my apartment, and really wish that the surrounding area could have been better.

There is no neigborhood here. It?s a luxury building in the middle of a very lonely dump. I do think that it?s a bit pricey, only because there are none of the expected neighborhood conveniences around, like a clean supermarket nearby, etc.

I also had no problems with any of the staff.

If you face Manhattan, you will get a serious blast of sunlight every morning, but I liked this. I never needed an alarm clock! The gym is adequate, but not great. Only one very expensive yoga class was offered as well.

Living at Portside has made living by water a new requirement for me... it?s quite relaxing and the sunsets are amazing.

The maintenance staff has always been very quick to respond, which was a surprise at first.

Doormen in the West Tower are NOT conceierges, nor are they truly doormen. Except for one person I know, if you have something heavy to carry -- too bad.. wrestle with opening the door yourself. They are, however friendly and cooperative if you ask for help.

I also don?t know too many of my neighbors; people pretty much keep to themselves here, which can make it a little boring to come home to. However, that would be my fault as well for not making more of an effort.

Parking anywhere in Jersey City is a hideous nightmare. The Jersey City Parking authority is incredibly predatory, and paper everyone?s car with tickets every day. They also boot and tow cars at the drop of a hat. I hate them with a real passion.

However, parking at Portside costs $225, so I don?t have a choice but to park on the street.

I have heard that management is very opportunistic, but I have to say that there is one manager who bent over backward to give me a deal, so I can?t say that they are all jerks. There is one lady in the office who is really dour and joyless, but she'll cooperate with you though.

I?d say check out Avalon cove or Alexan before buying here. Parking is included, I hear, and their amenities beat the heck out of ours.
