If you decide to rent at Portside Towers, prepare to be continually inconvenienced. The management of Portside are the most inept and inconsiderate individuals you can imagine. They have no concept of customer service nor do the even try to attempt it. They are nice and wonderful when you first arrive. Once you have signed the lease and paid your rent, the nice and wonderful turns into disinterested and don't care. We have been here since 2002, during that time we have suffered 2 water pipe breaks, numerous fire incidents and other alarms. The management, does not notify you if there is a problem until well after the fact. When the pipes burst we did not know until there was no water. They can plan silly events and advertise them, but they can't inform you that you will have no water or no hot water. The fire incidents are the worst. They plague you with constant testing of the intercom and fire drills, but when an actual incident happens you hear nothing from the management. Fire engines are pulling up in all directions and there is no communication whatsoever. We've have even had kids pulling fire alarms as pranks and nothing is being done. Worst of all the cleaning staff here cannot clean. They can move the dirt from one side to the other but that is the extent. You pay a high price to live here but they don't pay the non-English speaking migrant workers a living wage to care enough to do a better job. The garbage room is constantly reeking from the garbage that is left by tenants who do not know what a garbage bag is or how to use one. The cleaning staff will pick up the garbage, but will not clean and sanitize. When you speak to the management staff about these problems they become crass and rude and don't care if your problem is solved. There is a high turnover of tenants here and it is because of the management staff.
There are constant upgrade and repair projects that are poorly planned and are extremely irritating to the residents. Portside uses migrant workers who speak no English and have no decorum. The workers bring any relatives they can find to do the work while they let their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews run up and down the halls making noise. The workers play their music loud and have even louder conversations, all of it right outside your door during all hours of the day and evening. Because these are migrant workers who are not authorize to work in the US, they work them 11 hours a day 6 days a week. If you decide to stay at Portside, make sure someone is home to keep an eye on your place. The workers have no concept of how civilized people should live. They touch things, spill things, and scratch up the floor. They will rummage through your personal property; they will use your bathroom, your kitchen or any portion of your apartment as though it were theirs. We saw one crew in an apartment having lunch and warming their strange concoctions in the microwave. During one project, they left our balcony door open, during the summer, allowing flies and mosquitoes to enter. It took us weeks to get everything out, including the stench of the workers.
Last and certainly not least, is the pet situation. If you have pets, you'll love this place. If you don't have pets and don't think animals should be kept in apartments, you will have a hard time living here. Most of the dogs are untrained and even worse their owners don't have any sense either. The owners allow their dogs to crap and urinate every and anywhere, including the front walk and the front columns. You cannot get into the elevator with dogs because they will jump on you or bark at you. Some owners allow their dogs to run up and down the hallways to get exercise. Some even let the dogs urinate or crap in the stairwells. Our wonderful management staff sends out memos threatening to raise pet rental fees, but no direct action is taken against the repeat offenders.
If you come here be prepare to take action yourself. If your neighbor has loud parties, threaten to call the police, that will put them in-line. If you step in dog crap call the health department and make a report. If you want to stop the noise from the dreaded Sand Bar, you will need to get organized and file a law suit against Portside and the Sand Bar owners to make it stop.
So come on down and enjoy the wonderful luxury of Portside Towers, you'll be glad you did.
