Fire burns through NJ apartment complex
(Middlesex-WABC, December 20, 2006) -
A third-alarm fire burned through an apartment complex in Middlesex Borough, New Jersey, Wednesday, and damaged at least four apartments.
Police say the fire broke out in the Middlesex Village Apartments complex, off Route 28, just before 10:30 a.m.
The fire burned through at least four of the apartments in Building No. 9, according to officials.
Authorities say one elderly woman living in a second-floor apartment was evacuated, but not injured.
Officials say most other residents seemed to be at work at the time of the fire.
The fire appeared to begin in a ground-floor apartment, Abe Radoncic, the complex's superintendent, said.
Radoncic said he attempted to open the door and go inside, but he couldn't because of smoke.
It took several hours to get the fire under control.
Heavy flames shot out the roof of the two-story structure, and a column of smoke was visible.
