I liked it in 2007, now in 2009 we are having problems

Years at this apartment: 2009 - 2009

When we moved in back in 2007, we really liked the apartment. It was small, which was okay as we were planning on upgrading in a year or two anyway. The washer/dryer is very convenient, the ladies in the rental office were friendly and helpful, and the maintenance staff was very good.
I am not sure if cuts were made along the way or if it is because of some staff changes, but there are some things that I've started to really not like about Village Square.
The address they recommend that you use is very confusing for visitors and for mail it seems as well. I can't really complain about all the issues we have with not receiving mail, or receiving the neighbor's mail in the complex, but it is an annoying problem.
For floor plan issues: The bathroom is on an outside wall. Sure you have your own hot water heater, but the pipes go through an outside wall. If you like cold showers in the winter and nice hot showers in the summer, that shouldn't be a problem for you. The air ducts for the central air end at the bedroom. Which means that the kitchen and the coat closet are nice and hot in the winter. However, the bedroom (also on an outside wall) is cold. The reverse happens in the summer.
There is a problem with having a communal door. I don't know who it is, but someone keeps opening the window in the shared hallway in the building (which have no screens) I get bees and wasps visiting quite often in the warmer months. They also can come in under your deck/back door. As does water in heavy rain. So a than can span about halfway into your kitchen can occur.
The pet fee is fair I think. A one-time fee without a monthly fee. Max of two animals, no dogs. Which is nice because you shouldn't have grass dead from urine in front of your building. However, the people in the neighborhood do walk their dogs through the complex.
The fitness center leaves a bit to be desired as some of the equipment will work, some without with a timer and it is all second-hand or really old. The pool is always cold, cold, cold!
Also, when we first moved in, the office had a policy where if you requested a package that was delivered via UPS, Fedex, DHL, etc to the rental office, you could pick it up during office hours or request that it is left at your door. You now have to stop by the office to pick up, I can kind of understand the liability of them leaving a package in the communal hallway. However, the only hours convenient to pick up for a 9-5 Monday through Friday worker would be on Saturday. The hours are 10-ish (because we have sat outside the office waiting to be let in to pick up a delivery on multiple occasions) to 4-ish (we have shown up to see the office closed at 3:45). Oh yeah, and lunch is 12-1, so you can't pick up then either. So us 9-5 renters have 3 maybe 4 hours when we can actually pick up the goods that are held there.
It is convenient to pay your rent, doing automatic credit card payments for a fee or in a drop-slot for checks when the office is closed. The washer/ dryer and the dishwasher are very convenient. It is nice to have a deck, but beware when they powerwash them! The guys that are employed to walk through your home to clean it, leave a trail of dirt and water back to your front door.
When they have regular maintenance for the whole complex, there is usually a notice to let you know so you can move stuff out of their way or kind of be prepared, but the span can sometimes be 2 weeks! I had to move my kitchen table every day for about 2 weeks before I went to work, and move to back so I could do when I got home so I could do laundry. The power washers also had some weird system worked out so that if you had chairs or anything else on your deck, you had to store them elsewhere for about a month for whenever they showed up. The order they did this in also made no sense. They skipped around the complex not even based on who had items on their deck! I can't it out, maybe they used a random number generator.
We rarely hear out neighbors, everyone seems to obey the rules of the complex as well. We don't have people doing oil changes in our parking lot, and I don't know of any animal hoarders. Good neighbors, okay grounds, sub-par office staff. That's Village Square!
