Although I've only been here a few months, I've not really had that many problems. Sure, the walls are very thin, and every surface looks like it's been painted 1000 times - but my apartment is huge, there is tons of closet space, the parquet floors are really nice, & the park access is wonderful. The A/C unit looks pretty old, and may be worthless once summer rolls around - but the windows make it easy to put in a unit, and since electric is included in the rent there's no incremental cost from using a window unit - so this is really a non-issue.
I had a few problems with my bathroom when I first moved in, but they were addressed right away and the maintainence staff was very helpful. It was far better than any response I got in my last few apartments in Hoboken.
A couple of the doormen are also extremely helpful.
My only major complaint is that the elevators are pretty small, which means any large sofas or beds need to be carried up the stairs. I don't live on high floor, so this didn't bother me too much - but I can't imagine what the people do who live above the 10th floor.
The thin walls don't really bother me, as I'm a very heavy sleeper and usually have music playing which drowns the sound out - but sometimes I worry that if I can hear voices/phones/footsteps through the walls, my alarm/stereo/sex/etc... could possibly annoy the hell out of my neighbors.
All-in-all, not a bad place to live by any means. Don't move here if you expect to have any wild parties or play an instrument, but otherwise I would recommend it.
Oh yeah, I need to mention that I'm in my mid-20s - so for someone my age this place is awesome. I don't know if I'd live here if I were older, but for now I'm extremely happy with it.

You talk mostly about the obvious things which one can see when viewing an apartment. You've left out the roach problems (perhaps you haven't found them yet), the obnoxious staff (perhaps you haven't needed them yet) and the elevator breakdowns (perhaps you haven't had one... yet).
I am SO happy since I moved out of Colony House.
P.S., I'm surprised to hear that you're my age. We always thought it was the WORST place to live if you're under the age of 40--at least if you're under the age of 40 and want to have a social life.
