Pay the extra money for a better apartment.
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 2/20/2009
Years at this apartment: 2008 - 2009
The positives:
It is in a great location. You are less than a five minute walk from everything! And the community is very diverse - whites, --------- (mostly ---------), ------, asians, young, old, professionals students, unemployed - you get everything! I absolutely love it. The other reviewer is right, there are a lot of different tenants, but I think that is a good thing. I havent' had any problems with anybody in the building - in fact, I love that there are so many different types of people different from me. Parking is fine, you can always find a spot on the street you might have to park on the side street but there is ALWAYS parking. It's also cheap (i.e. compared to other apartments in Jersey). So, I love the location and people. The workers are nice too...but
The negatives:
The building is extremely old and I've had soooooo many problems with my apartment. I've been there for 10 months and I've had the super come in four times to unplug my sinks and bathtubs (he is really nice, but I am use to same day service, he takes his time delivering service and I always have to tell his boss to tell him to do something otherwise, he won't even answer his pager).
The first day I moved in the tub was filled with dirty chalky water and I could not shower for three days (I just moved here from Buffalo, NY and did not know anybody) because he took so long before he came to unclog the backed up sink. I also heard a mouse (or something) scratching in the wall the first week I moved in - I never heard it again. I saw a roach in the laundry room (which is quite dirty - the building exterior is nice though) and on two seperate occasions found one (a roach) in my apartment.
The gas got turned off for three weeks - I kept bugging them to fix it, and it wasn't until I found out that they had a violation with the gas company and brought that to their attention that they fixed the problem. The bathroom pipes are busted and plumbing is shot - sometimes after the person showers upstairs I get a horrible leak in my bathroom falling into my bathtub (I'm not the only one as I have talked to others who have said the same thing). I never had a problem with my heat, but I know of two other people whose heat does not work for long periods. My bathroom lock is broke - I got stuck in the bathroom and had to use some McGyver ingenuity to get myself out - so my bathroom door doesn't close. I could go on for days but the final straw was yesterday my sink backed up and it smelled like waste in my apartment and I had to clean it up - there is no real emergency contact so I had to just keep running water down my drain all through the night so that it wouldn't keep backing up and making me have to clean up until the super came in the morning (after his boss told him to) to fix it - he didn't really fix it though because they need a whole new piping system. The water is cloudy and I don't drink any tap - I only boil tap water for cooking AFTER I USE THE BRITA WATER FILTER. I've never had any problems with anything being stolen, but I know of some people who have had their things stolen (i.e. laptops, radios etc).
Needless to say, I am going to try to end my lease early because those conditions are unacceptable to me. I'm going to try to find something very close to that area because I love the area and the people so much. But Sista' girl has standards and New Bruswick Arms does not fit those standards. I hope this helps you decide!
