Hi,

I'm considering moving to Newark, and I'm especially interested in Eleven80 because of the shuttle service. I would prefer to not need to buy a car, and I was wondering if someone could comment on how do-able it is to survive here without one.

My new job will be along the train line, so my commute to work should be as simple as walking to Penn station and hopping on the train.

What I'm concerned about is the everyday stuff that a normal 20-something guy would need. Things like going to restaurant, movies, grocery store, bars....etc. It doesn't seem like theres a whole lot of that within walking distance, so I would need to rely on the shuttle service. Am i right'

How many percent of the tenants would you estimate to NOT have a car'

50%' Or More'

thanks

The shuttle is not part of the lease and therefore not guaranteed. It is just a "value add" that they decided to add when the grocery store that they promised to be in the building turned out to be another deli like three other on the street. Generally the shuttle service itself is good but it is only for a few hours late at night but it works for most people to go to the grocery store or maybe out for dinner. But that is about it. Recently there were several days without service but generally it is pretty good. But it is extremely busy as there is one shuttle and over three hundred people waiting to use it in its four hour daily window. You are right, there is nothing much in walking distance. New bar right next door though, The Spot. Shuttle might take you to movies and stuff but since the shuttle window is so tiny you would have an extremely difficult time being able to catch the shuttle in both directions. Restaurants, bars and grocery stores do tend to work as long as you work normal hours.

Originally from Newport (in Jersey City) and recently moved to Eleven80. While I do have a car, I often use it for weekends only. Getting around is pretty easy; whether its through the shuttle service, NJ Transit or PATH train (easy commute to the NYC) or the local buses (available till 1am, then rely on cab service which I find to be really good). Ironbound, which is 10 minutes away from Eleven80, has a LOT of restaurants and bars to frequent. The food is amazing too. Also some good restaurants near the NJPac area (walking distance from Eleven80). Hope this helps.

A car is not necessary. NJTransit offers plenty of service, a lot of it running 'till 1 or 2. PATH is all night and the shuttle now has a 1:00a Hoboken weekend pickup. I hardly use the shuttle at all -- there are a lot more local transit vehicles available than the one shuttle and generally it's faster to make use of that stuff unless you're making a quick trip. PS: the one earlier poster is mistaken about the shuttle window. It runs from 7:00p until 4:00a on Fri and Saturday. EDIT: There are a lot of places within walking distance... it just depends what you consider walking distance. My favorite place is a mile away, but it's a 10-15 minute walk. Even in half that distance, though, there are several places to go. Just check Google Maps.
