Nice apartments, bad soundproofing

Moved out 2 years ago, cleaned thoroghly, had no problems getting our entire security deposit back.

Pros:
Large, clean apartments with lots of closet space. No bug problems. Walk-ins both in the living room and the bedroom, and there's even a closet in the bathroom.
Laundry rooms plentiful, clean and hours are convenient. They use a card system for payment, which you can refill as needed.
Large outdoor patios, most of which have insect screening. There's even more closet space in the furnace room right off the balcony, and the view of the common grounds is very nice.
Kitchen space is limited, but the cabinets and appliances were new when we moved in. The dishwasher's kinda small, but it's better than nothing.
Private entrances
Parking is never a problem. Guess it depends on where your apartments are.
Maintenance has been hit or miss. Even though you really have to keep on them to get them over, they're friendly and thorough and have always done a decent job.

Cons:

Noise!!! The soundproofing is horrible, we lived upstairs and we could hear everything our downstairs neighbor did. But if you always have TV or music going it drowns out a lot of that noise. The soundproofing must be horrible for the people on the bottom, the wood is sinking in at certain spots and the floors always creak. We put rugs down all over (Don't bother with carpeting--they tear that out after you move) but making noise was unavoidable if you want to, you know, move around your apartment.

They make you buy and install your own mini blinds (mandatory) and you have to take them down when you leave, which is a huge pain. Why not just provide blinds if they're mandatory' It's not like be a huge expense for them, and maintenace has the tools and experience to do it much quicker than most residents.

No pets. Some are grandfathered in, and a lot of people have cats anyway. They seem to turn a blind eye to it though, until someone complains. Happened to us. Don't take that risk!

Exhorbitant fees to use the pool facilities. In my current apartment, it's free.

Management is OK depending on who you talk to. Whoever said the front office people can't do ---- for you are right, they're nice but generally unhelpful.

The lease is impossible to get out of and they won't let you see the apartment you rent before you sign the lease, so you're taking your chances.

The area itself is ok but 516 is always crowded and getting anywhere (like the parkway or 287) is convoluted and inconvenient.

So all in all, pretty good place to live if you don't have pets and don't mind the noise.
