Ok, we haven't moved in yet, but we've made our down payment and are awaiting our move in date for a Townhouse in Harbortown Ports. After reading some of these reviews, I went to Harbortown on 4-5 occassions (at different times of the day and evening) to see how the community was. The grounds were very well kept and extremely clean. There was a security jeep patroling the area on one day and on the second day there was a cop (now, I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.). On both visits, I saw women walking dogs, fathers walking with their infants and toddlers, people sitting in lawn chairs on their balconys and stoops, and small children playing in the playground.
Now, keep in mind, that I'm from Jersey City...i know the hood and I did not see it in Harbortown or in the immediate area. Yeah, Perth Amboy isn't the most affluent community, but it's not Newark, it's not Jersey City, it's not Irvington or Elizabeth...it's Perth Amboy. Now don't take this as me saying that it's a perfect community with no crime, because that's not what I mean. But I don't think you're gonna be dodging bullets on your morning drive or evening commute.
The unit I'm moving into is still being constructed, but luckily one of the contractors allowed my wife and I to walk through our unit. We were both very impressed with the space and the overall design. While the washer and dryer are possibly the smallest I've ever seen in my entire life (you'll be lucky if you can fit one full load), they were new and conviently placed. The master bathroom had a sky light which was a pleasant suprise, and it seems that we have access to the attic for additional storage space.
We have a view of Raritan Bay (at least until they build new units which will kill our view) and unfortunatley a view of the oil refinery which is directly behind us. Hopefully Al Qaida does not decide to use this as a target. Our unit is all the way in the back and not around any play ground. We are very excited about moving in.
Harbortown is a steal. We are currently in Union county and have been looking in the general area (Union, Somerset, Middlesex) for an apartment as my wife and I are not yet able to purchase a house. Our goal was to find someplace affordable (so that we can save) and spacious (she's 7 months pregnant). Harbortown is just that. A 3 bedroom apt. with 2.5 bathrooms, washer, dryer, frig, dishwasher, balconies and terraces (depending on the unit), you're not gonna find that in the North/Central Jersey area for under $2000.
Now, keep in mind that this is my "before" review. If my opinion changes after moving in and living there for a while, you will get my "after" review. Stay tuned.
I respect and appreciate all of the other posts because some of them played a role in the location of the unit we finally chose (on a far corner, away from playgrounds).

My before review was alot like yours. I sincerely hope you dont encounter the inconveniences that I have. Keep in mind that while everything is brand new, it is poorly installed. I know that even when you purchase a new (or old) home there are issues, but there were just too many right off the bat. Heating, AC, washing machine, bathroom tiles needed to be repaired within our initial 3 months. Hopefully this was a trial and error phase for them and the rest of the units are better built.
You are right about the neighborhood which consists of hardworking, respectable families. I've heard the stories about gang activity but have never seen any thugs in the area. Good luck!
