Anxiously awaiting the end of our lease...

My fiancee and I moved here last May right out of college. The good thing about this being our first apartment is that any place we live after this can only be better. WHere to start'

1. The air conditioner is awful. We often have it on then ask each other, "Is the air conditioner working'" It barely pumps out some slightly cool air. And there is no air conditioning in the bedroom. Last summer we suffered through it, soaking our sheets with sweat every night. This summer we bought a window air conditioner for $200, which we will just have to sell when we move out in April since the much nicer apartments we want to go to have a modern invention called central air. And on the flipside, when the heating comes on in the winter it's unbearable. We have our thermostat all the way down and it is boiling in here. The heat from the other apartments just sort of boxes around you, and there is no escape. It's so bad we have the windows wide open in the dead of winter.

2. We aren't the only tenants in the apartment. There are bugs bugs everywhere. Even though we had never seen a cockroach specifically in our place, last month we had to inconveniently clear out all of our kitchen and bathroom cabinets so they could bomb them. It seemed to work! We only see about 75% as many bugs as before! Mice were also a big problem. Up until August this year, we trapped about 2 mice a week, which is ridiculous. Our repeated complaints went basically unheard for over a year, the only response being that they tried to plug up holes in the wall behind the kitchen appliances (which didn't work at all) and they gave us some more glue traps. Gee, thanks. But this August they put a bunch of poison in the basement and we haven't had a mouse since (knock on wood), which is nice, and it only took them 16 months.

3. The walls are as thin as Calista Flockhart. The woman next to us was pregnant, and we got to hear perfectly hear her morning sickness daily as we got ready for work. If we're sitting in silence in our apartment, we can hear every word from the TV in the downstairs neighbor's place. But thank God we don't have a downstairs apartment. With the thin walls and hardwood floors, it has to seem like a herd of elephants above you. Fortunately the neighbors are relatively quiet people.

4. The community is just basically unfriendly and unwelcoming. In a complex of several thousand people, you feel like you're all alone. And I love the fact that there are around 5 laundry rooms for the entire complex. It makes doing laundry a draining task.

5. The apartments are just old and built cheaply, even the renovated ones like we have. A couple closet doors fell off a couple of times and the wooden rod in the bedroom closet where we hang our clothes snapped three times before they super reinforced it. The basement area underneath our building floods every time it rains. We got a surprise $200 electric bill because they coudln't get into the basement to read the meter since it was flooded for 3 months. And the doorbell is the most annoying noise you'll ever hear in your life.

Overall, avoid this place at all costs. It's way overpriced and not worth it at all. There's just no reason to live in a scumhole like this. We didn't move last time our lease was up only because we were in a financial bind, but nothing could stop us from flying out the door this time. We're scouting other apartments and counting the days...
