overpriced for the area

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
Pros: Upgraded apartments have a modern kitchen, microwave oven included; There are almost always apartments available (no wait lists) for quick move-in, often with special discounts; Plenty of parking, at least for the Carlton Ave. aparments; Lease terms are favorable if you have to relocate -- no break lease fee if you move from one Home Properties complex to another one (and these properties exist throughout the Northeast and the Midwest); Good neighborhood with a mix of Indian, white, and hispanic families; Adequate heating.
Cons: As many people have already mentioned, the air conditioning is for all practical purposes non-functional; Plumbing and sewage backups in the bathtub is a serious problem; Bathroom fixtures (towel and toilet paper racks) are falling apart; Generally an ugly set of buildings; The strict no-pets policy is apparently relaxed to allow spiders and cockroaches and other vermin; They do not install individual mailboxes! Your mail goes through a slot in the security door to be shared, and possibly stolen, by your neighbors. Get a PO Box for your credit card bills, bank statements, etc. if you plan to move here;
Poor sound insulation; Smelly and often dysfunctional laundry rooms; Narrow stairwells make moving furniture into 2nd floor apartments a challenge; The $1000 that they (over)charge for rent will give you a nice modern apartment anywhere else in the Piscataway-Edison area.
