I lived at McGuires Grove for 3 years and only recently moved to be closer to my job. As with every apartment, there are pros and cons:
Cons:
- Stray cats EVERYWHERE, the further back you go, the worst it seems to get
- No pets allowed, but people seem to ignore that rule and have pit bulls, siberian huskies, etc.
- Apartment isn't in the best shape. Paint peeling inside and out (especially on doors), bath tub was in bad shape, door handles fall off
- Rent is high
- Not the safest area at night. Not so much I was very scared, but there was someone attacked in the woods next to the shopping center about a year ago.
Pros:
- It's close to a lot of shopping centers, restaurants and stores including Whole Foods, Panera Bread, Kohls, etc.
- Maintenance is fairly reliable
- Washer and dryer hook-up in many units
- Fairly close to train station to NYC
- Generally quiet, my neighbors have always been pleasant
- I was able to get away with having a cat, no one bothered me about it. Yes, it's against the rules but if you're an animal lover it helps you that everyone looks the other way...
- Verizon Fios is available. Fios is SO much better than Comcast
- Lots of closets and plenty of space
So, for me, the pros outweighed the cons and I would say that the only way I'd give the apartments a higher rating is if they lowered the rent. I think it's overpriced for the area and I've also noticed A LOT of apartments are starting to go vacant. There are a lot of people moving out, so you'd think they would try to keep their current residents and lower the rent. They have a deal going on now though where current residents get $100 of their rent for the year if they renew their lease. $100 isn't much though, wasn't worth it to me...

I HAVE LIVED AT MCGUIRES GROVE. MIDDLETOWN FOR 20 YEARS. IT WAS A VERY NICE PLACE TO LIVE UNTIL THE LONG TIME OWNER TURNED IT OVER TO HIS OFFSPRING. SINCE THEN ITS BEEN ALL DOWN HILL.THE LEASE STATES NO PETS. THERE ARE MORE DOGS IN HERE THEN THE A.S.P.A HAS IN EATONTOWN. THERE ARE TWO WOODED SECTIONS CALLED CAT CITY EAST AND CAT CITY WEST. THE MANAGEMENT NEVER ADDRESSES THE MAIN THINGS WRONG HERE.LIKE THE WINDOWS ARE 50 YEARS OLD I KID YOU NOT.IF YOU DONT MIND SPENDING 300.00 A MONTH IN THE WINTER THEN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU.I PAY 1165.00 PER MONTH AND FREEZE MY --- OFF IN THE WINTER . IN THE SUMMER I HAVE TO TURN THE AC FULL BLAST BECAUSE IT GETS SO HOT IN THESE APARTMENTS. IF YOU LEASE HERE YOU WILL PAY AT LEAST 1000 TO 2000DOLLARS EXTRA A YEAR IN UNNECESSARY ELECTRIC BILLS. THE WINDOWS OPEN ONLT FROM THE BOTTOM AND FALL OUT OF THE FRAME WHEN YOU OPEN THEM.DONT KNOW HOW THESE WINDOWS PAST THE LAST STATE INSPECTIONS SOMEONE MUST HAVE LOOKED THE OTHER WAY? I WILL NOT BE RENEWING MY NEXT LEASE. IM TIRED OF THE LIES.MAYBE IF THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE RISE UP AND WITH HOLD THERE RENTS MANAGEMENT WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. AFTER ALL WE PAY THE RENTS NOT THEM. GIVE US WHAT WE PAY FOR AND SPEND THE MONEY AND FIX WHATS BROKEN NOW OR YOUR GOING TO TURN MCGUIRES GROVE INTO A GETTO. YOUR HALF WAY THERE NOW.
