I'm a grad student at Rutgers. Compared to the other apartments in the price range, this is Very reasonable place to live.
Pros: There is carpeting in the top floor and hard wood on the bottom. My apartment had all new appliances as well. I also never had a problem with maintenance. They took care of everything in a timely manner. The manager never really bothers you, and the laundry area, although a bit dingy, is usually free for use.
Cons:The downside to this apartment is your neighbors. I personally had my car vandalized. There is free parking, but limited, and some parking spots are parallel parking. If a neighbor has friends over you are left NO choice but to parallel park in a parking lot, something many many ppl do but it does not hinder free space when pulling in or backing out. Because I was forced to parallel park Several times, someone wrote a note (without letting me know who they are) on my window saying "it's annoying that you park here." I can only assume they had deficient reversal driving skills. In any case what was I to do'' If people had parties and left me and others nowhere else to park, I had to park there, and so I did. And my rear view mirrors were Smashed. That is not the only incidence of safety concern. The police has been called to the area more than once in the year I've lived there over domestic disputes I assume from what I saw. The walls, no surprise, are also thin.
Overall: This is a relatively quiet area, just 5min from the bustle of New Brunswick. If you need to be in the area and don't want the party college crowd, this is it. If your budget is tight, this is also a good fit. No pets though, but they might let you get away with a cat.
