I've been living here for over 4 years and am finally moving out this month. I originally chose Somerset Woods because I was moving up from Florida and wanted something comparable to what I had in FL. Also the fact that cable and internet were provided made it that much easier to relocate to NJ. (Basic cable service included in rent, internet an additional fee)

When I moved in, I ordered their internet service, which is your only option. You can't get DSL here. Went through the setup and I was connected but had no internet service. A tech comes out and he can't get online either. A month later after the ethernet cables to my apartment are rewired I'm finally online.

For $50/month they advertise broadband speeds, but in my experience it has been far from that. At best during the holidays when everyone is on vacation I've been able to get close to 1MB downloads but usually hovers around 500-600k. I've also had problems with files and images being corrupted during download and upload.

They're in the process of switching to a new internet provider. So far it's been much worse. Download speeds are regularly comparable to dialup and latency is usually over 500ms. Hopefully they'll get those issues resolved and finally offer a respectable internet service to their residents.

If you're into online gaming, you're not going to have much fun here, if you can get online at all. They have a firewall at their end so your IP address is not publicly accessible, which is a problem for most games.

They do include a basic cable tv service. Basic being an understatement. They have DirecTV for their cable tv service and have chosen, seemingly at random, about 50 channels to provide to their residents for free. At any given time any number of channels could be static or have a frozen picture or have no sound. It usually takes a few days before the channels get fixed. The picture quality is also substandard on many of the channels. Most of the channels are snowy and if you have a big HDTV set you might as well stick to DVD's.

You do have the option of purchasing the full DirecTV service for an additional cost at full retail DirectTV price. You're not able to take advantage of any deals or specials, at least that's what I've been told when I've called.

Probably my biggest complaint however has been my hot water, or lack of. Every winter my pipes freeze and I lose hot water. Sometimes for a few days, sometimes for a week or more. At least in the design of my apartment, my hot water heater sits outside of the building in a small enclosed room hanging off of the patio. I'm not sure where the pipes are freezing but it seems like there are several places they could freeze based on the layout.

Maintenance has been able to thaw out my pipes and restore hot water, but depending on the weather, the pipes may freeze again after a few days. I will add that management was able to give me the keys to another apartment during the many times I was without hot water.

In my opinion, overall it's a nice place. If you're staying for a year or less I would recommend it. If you think you may stay longer or if good internet service is important to you I would recommend going elsewhere.
