Wow. I'm shocked to hear all of these complaints, but I guess you take the good with the bad. I used to live in Mill Run, on the Irvington side, with my Mom three yrs ago. I loved the place. At that time, they had radiators in the apts & it was always warm. We never had to ask for the heat to get turned up. I moved to Maple Gardens, which is a catastrophe compared to Mill Run. I was looking for apts & nothing came through but I applied for Mill Run & came to look at the apts. I realized that they have renovated since I moved out three yrs ago. I have now been there for 2 months. They have a heating system now so basically they don't have to pay the heating bill for tenants anymore. OK, you guys are right, it kinda sucks. They have only two in each apt & it really doesn't keep the apt that warm. I use a humidifier for allergy purposes so it doesn't bother me that much. I keep the temp & the same number & rarely change it. It only goes up to 72 in most apts. The neighborhood, I think, is pretty safe. It is right on the border of Union. Cops are always patrolling, but I have heard of break ins. I live on the 2nd floor & keep my windows closed & locked when I'm not home. EVERYBODY should do that. You can get burglarized in the suburbs as well. My biggest complaint is the maintenance dept. They basically only have 2 old guys doing repairs on more than 1100 units. (I know this for a fact cause the maintenance man himself told me)If you complain about something. It will not get fixed for months. I hate to say it, but you have to be down right ignorant & telephone harass the dept. to actually get something done. Whoever the girl is who answers the phone is a true B#$%*! But that could be because of all the complaints. I have a couple of maintenance issues that haven't I haven't even gotten a phone call about yet. I do think they need to do a better job with the grounds & parking lots when it snows. On the other hand, I never have a problem finding a parking space in the lot unless it is super late at night, but then I just park on the street, it's really not a big deal. I never seen any mold but I will keep an eye out for it. My hot water has never been out since I've been there. I believe the inside of the apts are beautiful. The new ones, like mine, that have been renovated, have been done well. I love the kitchen coutertops & cabinets. I love the bathroom & fixtures and there is plenty of closet space. I really don't hear much noise, but that could be just where I'm located. I specifically didn't want any of my windows facing the street. I do have a problem with their bathtubs. For some reason, the maintenance paints over them instead of installing new porcelain ones. I guess they don't want to spend the money but the paint constantly peels. It's peeling now and I can't take a bath in that. I've complained with no response. I plan on pursuing that. My biggest problem is not Mill Run, but a nieghbor across the hallway from me who's been living in the same apt for 16 or more yrs. This person is a nosy, busybody, with nothing to do. This person complains & harasses another neighbor in my bldg, and I believe that this person thinks they are in charge of everything since they've been living here longer than everyone else. I pay my rent to have piece of mind & I live alone so I don't have to answer to anyone. I don't bother anyone and no one bothers me, but I get the idea that my neighbor is always spying on me and that sometimes feels uncomfortable.
The moral of this story is: When you rent, you don't know what you're going to get. You stand the chance of having all of the problems that I expressed, but ultimately they are not deal breakers, at least for me. I love the apt, it's convenient for me, to work, friends, family, laundry,(I don't use their laundrymat), hair salon, shopping, etc. (NO BROKEN STINKY ELEVATORS LIKE MAPLE GARDENS, THANK GOD!!) My neighbor is a pest, but whatever, I just ignore that person and keep minding my own business. I used to live in Maple Gardens for christ sake. Go and visit that pitiful excuse for an apt complex. When it comes to that area, (Irvington, Union, borderline), that is the best that it gets. The rent is pretty reasonable for what I'm getting, it could be worse. If you want better, pay for better. But can you really afford it in these times? You will never be fully satisfied until you own, until then expect these little nuances and if it bothers you that much, contact the Health Department excessively, and eventually something will get done about it.
Hope this helps!
