I moved into sun village a little over 2 years ago because I was ready to move off campus, but I did not want to move too far from school. I had a lot of friends who lived at sun village and reccommended it highly because it was mostly UNM or CNM students living there. I figured it would be a good transition from the dorms. I loved it the first year there. It was quiet, I could get work done and still have fun on the weekends without hassle, it was close to campus, and the rent was comperable to other apartments.
About a year ago the apartments changed hands and the staff was completly changed along with the feelings I had associated with living there. After about 2 months of the new management being there it seemed that the gate never worked. Once ever few months it would work for about a week and then they would just leave it open. This even seemed to bring on a different type of resident as well. I started to notice a lot more parties during the week and more and more thugs walking around the complex. 4 months ago I had my car stolen from the property during the daylight! I parked at 6pm and by 10pm it was gone. I reported the problem to the front desk and got nothing more than a simple sorry and a referal to the lease that states they are not responsible for the increasing amount of stolen vehicles and property.
One week later I bought a used car with an alarm to deter another situation like before. It wasn't 3 days after I bought the new car when I heard the alarm going off at 5am. I went outside to check on my car and loe and behold I no longer had a passenger side window!! While waiting for the police to respond I was joined by 3 others that had their cars broken into that night. We all had lots of fun having to report things that were stolen from our cars while we were asleep.
I asked management where security was and was BEYOND frustrated when I was RUDELY told that it was most likley my fault for having something in the car that the thief wanted. It was MY FAULT someone broke into my car at my apartments when I was sleeping because I had something some scumbag wanted!! By the way I didn't, The car had just been purchased and I had nothing in it but a tape deck in the dash and a picture of my nephew on my visor.
After the second break in I was looking for another apartment. I recieved my new lease contract and was happy to tear it up. I moved out as soon as I found a new place and just paid the rest of the rent till I could break my lease. I am soooooo happy to be out of that ghetto hell hole !!
After I turned in my intent to vacate I went in one last time to the front office and while I was there i noticed the update to the pricing of each apartment and was truly amazed at how much rent had gone up since I moved in. The prices showed rent for a 1 bedroom was around the same price of renting a 3 bedroom house in the same area.
I hope this review helps someone see that although the benefit of being closer to school does NOT outweigh the price you pay both monetarially and mentally. I was terrified to get stuff down from my car at night in fear that I could be robbed on the way in.
Good luck if you do move in and i hope you have good insurance cause you will lose something.
