I had to get out of my lease a month early with this place. I arranged, well ahead of time, to pay a pro-rated amount of rent with the staff until they could get someone else in to my unit. I didn't receive any kind of bill for this amount until the 8th of that month, and by this time they had locked me out of it when I still had belongings inside. This wasn't the part that was a pain in the ass, though.
Fast forward about a week later after I've paid the amount they finally billed me, and I get another bill at my new address. On this bill is a "Lease Break Fee" for $350. This is illegal according to the arrangement we made- the law according to New Mexico Tenant-Landlord relations is that "The Tenant is only responsible for LOSSES the landlord sustains due to tenant negligence." Since someone moved in after I stopped paying rent in the middle of the month (pro-rated amount) Telegraph Hill did not sustain any damages. After I argued with one of the managers (her name is Denise Garcia.. she is the one that will blatantly lie to you) I eventually got this bogus charge taken off. However, after this, she tried to tell me that I forfeited my deposit completely by breaking the lease, and that I owed them $110. $35 of this was.. and I'm not joking.. itemized on the bill as "Removal of one bag of trash." This "trash" was a bag of clothes. At this point I looked up all of the laws in the state of New Mexico, and found out that this person (Denise Garcia) was blatantly lying to me. It is also illegal for landlords to "forfeit" a deposit of a tenant. I sent them a letter via registered mail, explaining to her the actual law on this subject, and after about three weeks of arguing I ended up only owing them $20. Don't let the secure look of these apartments fool you.. I had two friends whose cars were broken in to while they were parked on the property. One of them actually had a TIRE stolen from their car. The other one was more lucky, and they only took his cup of change (''') I also regularly lost internet and cable connections, not at the fault of PNM or Comcast, and was without running water for approximately a week during the year I lived at Telegraph Hill. DO NOT rent at Telegraph Hill Apartments. You will regret it.
