College Frathouse

Although this apartment complex has the convenience of being in close proximity to New Mexico State University, during the fall and spring semester timeframe, this place is a zoo. It is incredibly noisy. Furthermore, the walls at this apartment complex are paper thin. My husband and I could hear our neighbors just as I am sure our neighbors could hear us. We could even hear, and feel, our neighbors as they walked around their apartment through the floor.

Although there is plenty of parking, the parking lot is usually filled with glass from beer bottles, so you still have to be careful where you park for you may wake up one day with a flat tire.

The landscaping of the complex is nice, and I believe the management finally fixed and cleaned the pool for resident use. However, the stairs need repair or repainting. Also the stairs do not have a non-slip covering on them so during the rainy season, you would have to becareful not to slip on any of the puddles on the stairs. It is also not common to find sporadic beer bottles as part of the landscaping.

The lighting at the apartment complex is pretty bad. Although the complex does have some lights, their are many lights around the complex that are broken and remain unrepaired. The lighting in the community areas where the stairs should be lit are probably also broken because the stairs are never lit. This can be a safety hazard if you are an upstairs resident.

Before the new management took over (a few months ago), the complex had a security company that would make a few rounds during the night time. It was at this time that we were having car break-ins as well. After the new management took over, they did away with the security company, and consequently, the noise went up. When I complained to the management, they said to "just call the police." We have not had anymore car break-ins (that I know about)but not having a security patrol that makes rounds and not having a well-lit complex can be a security issue for some.

I am not sure if the maintenance aspect of the complex has changed. When I first moved into the apartment, the carpet had not been changed (I am not sure what standard procedure is here in New Mexico.). There were enormous stains on the carpets, my fixtures were caked with calcium build-up, and the bathrooms were dirty. There was rust build-up by the fixtures and the bath tub. The drawers in the bathroom had not been cleaned (There were still toothpaste residue and pubic hair in the drawers from the previous resident). The doorknobs in the bedrooms and bathrooms did not properly work. Also, my microwave did not work and the garbage disposal was broken. When I dug around in the disposal, I found beer bottle caps. I would have thought that these things would be checked before allowing another resident to move into the apartment. When I made a list of things for the maintenance department to come look at, they were very sloppy.

The air conditioning at the complex is horrendous. During the day, the apartment does not cool down and the air conditioners had recenty been changed!

I am not sure if the office staff has changed its ways, but at the beginning of the management turnover, the apartment manager was rude and standoffish. The manager also lacks proper professional communication skills. However, this might have a lot to do with the fact that she has to deal with uneducated college students. But, that is still not an excuse to use that approach on everyone at the apartment complex.

Overall, if you are looking for convenience of proximaty to the university, this place will do. I believe it may be a bit nicer than some other apartment complexes that are close by and you can probably almost always find a party somewhere, if that is what you are used to. But, if you are a person who is looking for an adequate place to live and feel comfortable, this is NOT the place.
