Not bad for single male military
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 4/18/2004
Years at this apartment: 2000 - 2003
I've read all the other comments listed for Eagle Trace. Some are exagerated, others are right on target.
Positives:
1. Right next to the base. Very convenient. The planes can be pretty loud sometimes, but if you're in the AF, you're probably used to it. The base/CC understands that Nellis is in Las Vegas and is considerate of the locals (ie nighttime flying is limited to about 1-2 months/year, and isn't that bad)
2. Big apartments. Nice kitchen that opens directly into living room. HUGE roman bathtub. Very large, very private porch (2nd floor only though).
3. Fullsize W/D is in seperate outside room (door as on the porch) -- can barely here them inside.
4. I never had a big maintenance problem but they were quick to fix a few minor problems.
5. Maybe I had quiet neighbors because I barely ever heard them. But I had an apartment that faced away from the parking lot. Do NOT get an apartment that faces the parking lot... G-Things do love to drive their $1500 beaters (w/$3000 stereo systems) through this place. I lived on the Northwest side of this complex.
6. Many of the residents are military, so that cuts down on problems with as*holes.
7. Do NOT tell management if you have a cat or some other non-noisy animal. You're just throwing away your deposit. They do not care if you have a pet as long as no one complains. My neigbor (facing the parking lot) had 2 cats that lived on the porch ledge for 3 years straight... no one ever said a word to them. There was even a damn dog somewhere in my building. But he was pretty quiet
8. The pools are pretty awesome. There's one about every 100 feet. Their technically closed after a certain hour but I used them whenever I wanted. The behemoth security woman apparently got too tired to walk to each one and kick people out. The pools in the back were well maintained and very quiet most of the time. Very nice.
9. Landscaping. This place was very well taken care of. They brought in what bunch of illegal immigrants every day to cut the lawn and trim the bushes. These dude's spoke no english at all but did a great job. When you're friends come into town, they should be impressed with the groundskeeping, palmtrees, etc... just don't tell them you live in the ghetto!
Negatives:
1. Security. Biggest issue. During the day, your wife and kids can feel safe. However, this place is in the hood. Your wife/kids should not really be out after dark here. In the 3 years I loved there... I am aware of 3 shootings within 3 blocks -- no joke -- one was a robbery at the drivethrough of the Jack in the Box right across the street (a cop shot the SOB, yeeeeah!). The other 2 were in the parking lot at the lounge right next to the Subway (2.5 blocks away). And the liquor store by the lounge was robbed at least twice that I know of -- just ask the Subway why they close at like 7pm.
My first week there, some dude tried to break into my apartment while I was there... with the TV on... and lights on. I bought a shotgun after that. Rick James biiiaatch! That never happened again though.
I caught dudes on a couple of occasions digging through the dumpster outside of my apartment for what I assume were papers for identity theft. I bought a shredder.
The front gate worked about 2 months total the whole time I was there. Pizza delivery dudes, kids from the trailer park right next store, and the G-Dogs all had the stupid code even when it worked. Heck, the gate worked so rarely that even when it was functioning nobody could remember the stupid code. We'd just wait for someone else to drive through (30 seconds) and follow them in.
About 6 people from my squadron lived here. 3 of them had their cars broken into (1 was like a 1989 nissan pathfinder with a stock casette radio -- that's all they stole). Rick James biiiiatch!
I actually saw the little punks peaking over the 5 foot concrete walls (no barbed wire) a dozen times waiting to jump over and steal crap.
And the rumor about that awesome security woman is true. Imagine the fear in the hoodrats' eyes when the saw the 300lb sasquatch waddling once a night at 2300 with her flashlight. She was the only security.
Summary: If you have no family, this place is alright! If you have a family, move in if you have to (3 months lease) and then move the heck out.
2. Bugs. On the bright side, all the cockroaches, etc leave at night to go drink water from the sprinklers. Seriously. Go outside at like 10pm and look down at the sidewalks. Little bastards. Oh yeah, and once a year (can't remember if it was spring or fall) come the ants. Little sugar ants WILL enter your apartment. They loved mine :) Even though it was clean, these little freaks (thousands of em) would go up and down every inch of the walls (covering about an inch at a time) for about 2 days. Realizing, there was no food, they'd leave like clockwork after they touched every inch of every wall. They wouldn't go on the carpet though. I guess they were too small to navigate it. I finally figured out that the family that lived below me were dirty morons. Roaches are always present. I didn't have a huge problem with them though. Found a black widow in my washer. That was cool. I'd never seen one before, but they are a wicked shiny black color so you WILL recoginize them. I put him in a jar and kept him for a week. Then he mildewed over and I chucked him. Another black widow took up residence in the light fixture outside in the hallway. He was cool. I have no idea how he got in there, but I don't think he could get out so I would lift up the piece of glass at the bottom of the fixture and let some moths in every night. He lived there for like 2 months. Then one day he was just gone. Sad... I never saw a scorpion in the apartment complex.
3. Parking. I only had 1 car and since I has an assigned spot I was pretty much alright most of the time. Parking is very limited in some areas of this huge complex, but other areas have tons of
extra parking (check this out if you have lots of visitors). Oh yeah... lets say you get home from work after the front office closes (after about 5pm and all day sunday) and you find someone in your spot' You can't have em towed because its private property and you don't own it (I tried). I had some jerk for about a week straight park in my spot every day. Since I got home after the office was closed and he was gone before the opened, there was nothing I could do. He was one day away from getting his tires retired prematurely. Parking is a frickin problem in some areas.
4. Weight room. Huge weight room! Lots of treadmills and stuff. For about a year, 1/3 of it didn't work due to missing pins, etc. But then they fixed it all and everything was fine for my last few months. It's also open till like 11pm which is nice. But once the front office closes, lots of G-Money Pimp Dogs come in to use it too. But that's cool, never had a problem with them. Eagle Trace advertises that they have like 3 smaller weight rooms too (by the pools) but they never really maintained the one by my apartment.
5. What am I forgetting... Trash... they were pretty good about cleaning up around my apartment. But I think that mostly had to do with the fact that I had good neighbors. Other areas of the complex were often trashed. DO NOT LIVE BY A DUMPSTER. In the summer they freaking stink.
6. Get a second floor apartment. I heard no noise. Apparently, the people below me could hear me though. But the walls are not paper-thin like some of these people were whining about. If you get the cheapest apartment in the place, your neighbors are probably G-Qtip Slim Shadies with 15 inch JL Audio car speakers rigged up to pimp on the she-things. So you get what you pay for.
SUMMARY: I liked the place. Huge, fairly cheap. Right next to the base. No traffic. Lots of fast food nearby. The G-Willyhomedogs didn't bother me (look mean when you see one!) Carry a pocket knife to and from your car at night (or opt for a concealed weapon, anyone can get a license in NV). Take the money you save on rent and gas and by a cool shotgun... good for homie defense and shooting scorpions out in the desert!
