Shared kitchen and bath makes for interesting living

My experience is from 1994. Things may have changed some since then, but I doubt it. . .

That said, living was fine as far as my things in my private studio room went. The living arrangement is private studio room, shared bath with one other tenant, and shared kitchen with three other tenants. The shared living quarters reduces rent expense.

When you look at the shared rooms, it became a sad situation (no one really held accountable for cleanup, etc. despite what the lease says). The toilet was clean because I cleaned it ("roomate" never did) and the kitchen was a disaster. The same dirty "roomate" kept asking me to put my utensils, appliances into the common kitchen, and I refused. Good thing. . . when he was evicted, he took all of his and everyone else's stuff that was in the kitchen. I was smart to not "share" my items in common in the kitchen and so preserved my belongings. I put my small refrigerator in my private room, no problems. Microwave living was better than going the "share a kitchen" route and get caught up into the "who stole what, didn't clean up that" routine, etc. etc. You get the picture.

Best strategy I think is to leave the kitchen alone, use the bath for what you have to do and stay as much as possible in your own private room. No real violence or drug/gang situation there at that time, but not the best of people there either.

Since everything is one story, noise bleed through the walls is only from what is next door to you (stereo, TV, talking). Get some earplugs and endure it.

In sum, Four Horizons is good for UNLV students and those who plan to stay there for a short period and then move on (to a better apartment or house). Having said that, It's an OK place to live. I'd give it the weakest of recommendations. . . each one has to make up their own mind. You might want to check out the complex on a Friday or Saturday night (for noise, etc.) and judge for yourself if you would be able to live there.
