I chose an apartment at Pinewood because after looking at other apartments available in my price range, it seemed comparitively nice. However, the old adage "you get what you pay for" holds true here.
Before I moved in, maintenance had replaced the carpet padding in my living room, but left the nasty, old, urine-smelling carpet. And left the pile of old padding on my balcony. My mailbox was broken into and it took 10 days, plus 2 calls and 2 visits to the leasing office, for them to fix it. I agree with the other reviewers, no matter how clean you are, you WILL have roaches. I've resorted to keeping my cereal and pasta in the fridge because nothing will keep the bugs at bay.
It seems like there is always at least one apartment in my building with a broken window--I don't know if this is due to burglars or the residents themselves. It could be either, because that's the type of people living in this neighborhood. The Pinewood management does do fairly stringent background checks, however there are a lot of neighboring apartment complexes that don't.
Overall, if you can't afford anything better, this is an OK place (the problems I had I'm sure you'd have in other low-income areas). But if you can afford even a little more, stay far away.
