La Cuesta is definitely an interesting experience. We'll start with what i good about this place...
Good: The neighborhood is very nice. There's a park right next to the complex, nice views of the city and canyon depending on your specific apartment, and convenient to downtown and the Meadowood area as well. The rent is pretty reasonable and there's some restaurants and other businesses just across the street which proves to be very convenient. The grounds have a lot of mature trees making the area very shady and visually pleasing.
The place is pretty quiet, though the soccer games in the park next door can get more than a little rowdy on those early summer mornings.
And the bad: The grounds are not well-maintained whatsoever. Most of the patio areas consist of sand and weeds, and just about everywhere you see years of pine needles gathered up everywhere. The pond is nice but often looks green and doesn't smell the greatest. The sidewalks have been replaced in some areas and not in others -- often uneven and quite damaged in places. Guiderails and fences are often unstable and just looking at the apartment complex from the canyon you can see that most of the decks haven't been painted in years. The grounds could be nice, but no one takes care of them like they should.
The apartments were built in the 70's and show their age as expected. They aren't terrible, but once again maintenance is nearly non-existent. Many units need painted, carpet is torn, etc. If you want something fixed, you're better off doing it yourself. They come out quickly enough, but their repair jobs are slapshot and careless, often using whatever random parts they may have available. If you want it fixed right, don't call management. Hopefully someone in your family is a handyman, since things will go wrong on a pretty regular basis, and La Cuesta's solutions rarely eliminate the problem.
Many of the carports have been damaged and never repaired, jagged pieces of metal hang out and are a potential hazard, and most of the walkways have lights that don't work, creating an often treacherous walk to your apartment.
There's a couple of pools, but no clubhouse to speak of, and no workout facility or anything like that. The amenities are definitely below par here.
Parking is terrible. There's not much available besides the assigned spaces, so if you have a second car you'll be parking on Skyline Boulevard or across the street at Barcelona Plaza shopping center. Some cars sit and occupy spaces and don't leave for months.
It seems that the problem at La Cuesta is a combination of lack of maintenance and just plain cheapness. It could be worse, but for the money you're spending, you could get a lot newer and better. If you're smart, look elsewhere.
