This was my first apt living on my own so I was super excited. It's small but cozy and very affordable. The location is decent too. However it was one of the grossest places I've ever lived. Terrible mouse infestation that they are aware of but refuse to do anything about (it was a long time ago so it may have changed). Before I moved in they showed me which unit I would be getting, but refused to let me tour the unit. Understandable as the old tenant had just moved and and they needed to clean it. I was over-eager so I peeked into the unit through the window and I was horrified to see black crust on the carpet outlining where furniture had been, whole ashtry contents dumped onto the carpet, moldy food, beer bottles and cigarettes everywhere and streaks of unidentified substances all over the walls. I panicked and ran to the leasing office saying I wanted a different apt! They said I had signed a contract so I could not get out of the lease for that specific apt (they said the contract isn't for a montly fee, but rather the total for the 12 month period, so something in the ballpark of $7k.) They assured me that the apt would be throughoughly cleaned and sanitized before my move-in date and that my only other option would be for them to take me to court if I didn't move in. I decided to be optimistic and on the date of the walkthrough (which they wouldn't schedule prior to my move in date) I was horrified to see they didn't replace the carpet, which was filthy and had cigarette burns and stains everywhere. I had my moving van waiting with furniture and couldn't afford to pay them another few days and had no where to store my furniture so I reluctantly agreed to move in, but made sure they noted that the carpet was a complete mess and should be replaced (they offered, but it would take 3 weeks in which I couldn't live in the apt and still had to pay rent, I declined as I had no where to stay and couldn't afford to pay rent plus hotel fees). I ended up buying huge rugs to make it livable.

Then came the mice. They must have cleaned the apt of mouse droppings just minutes before my walk through because by the next day there was mouse droppings everywhere. I complained about it but they said I must have left food out (I had no food in the apt at the time, just moved in) and then they pretended that it was completely a new problem...speaking to my neighbors cleared that lie up fast. Then they said that by state law they weren't allowed to do any kind of pest control, that it was completely my problem to deal with. (lie. Every other apt I've lived in sprayed for pests regularly). Basically I spent 11 months trying to get them to make the apt livable and I contanted caught mice and cleaned and tried to seal up the holes that were everywhere. It was a nightmare!

Then on top of everything, when I moved out they tried to charge me $700 for "carpet replacement!!!) I actually left the carpet in better condition than I moved in. I paid to have the carpet shampooed twice. I had my copy of the walk through showing the condition of the carpet and the extreme damaged state and that it needed desperately to be repaired, but they tried to say I wrote it in after the fact and that they conveniantly "lost" thier copy of the form. Law ruled on my side, but it was a terrible hassle to sort out.

I went through a 3BR and a 2BR that were empty and both were absolutely clean and beautiful...Perhaps since you lived there, things have changed, I would hope because I want to move there after the 1st of the year...The manager was sweet and nice and the outdoor premises were clean and tidy...No litter anywhere...So again, I hope there is a big difference than when you were there though I am sorry you had such a terrible experience.

Just some advice from someone who had a somewhat similar situation....First of all, I am pretty sure that in some areas you have a short period (maybe 48 hrs?) after you sign a lease that you can back out. Also, you should NEVER sign a lease for an apt. that you haven't seen for reasons exactly such as this. Finally, there are renter's laws (I'm not sure if your apartment would be bad enough though) that state that they must provide you with a sanitary and reasonably clean apt--there are numerous criteria that should be met. I know all of this because I considered trying to break my lease at my last apt. for unsanitary conditions. I'm not sure how easy it is to do but you should certainly not be bullied into living in filth/unhealthy conditions....if faced with a situation like this there are renter's rights groups in the area that you could contact.
