General information before you lease

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2007
After living here for about three years, here are some things to know before you rent:
Management & staff: We never had a problem with either until we moved out - the staff was always very friendly in the office. We also never needed to call maintenance in the three years we lived there. When the new current management took over, random "maintenance" would be performed on the apartments every month, but you get a 24 hour notice before they come to do it.
Preliminaries: Make the leasing agent show you YOUR apartment before you move in and document with photos what it looks like. Our carpet was stained in several places when we moved in and we ended up having to pay for new carpet out of our deposit afterward. If you can get a third floor apartment, do it. It is safer and quieter.
Parking: You get one assigned carport. If you get home after 6pm and don't park in the carport, enjoy your long hike from the unassigned parking area back to your apartment.
Safety: Lighting is good in the parking lot. A contracted patrol unit is on-call (they give you a phone number) at night. Rapes and robberies have occurred here and at nearby apartment complexes in the past. The Reno Police Gang Unit stakes out the apartments at least once a month. The gates offer the illusion of safety. They do often break down, but in addition to that, there is a universal code that opens them to anyone and anyone can tailgate a resident in.
Moving Out: Breaking your lease costs one month rent. They don't inspect your apartment until you have moved out to assess the cost of clean up. We did not receive our deposit back and in addition to that, we were billed for clean-up. Make sure you take photos before you move in to prove later the condition you leave the apartment in the same (or close to) what it was when you moved in. Management at this point was unresponsive to our questions of what was causing the extra billing for clean-up and we finally just let them keep our deposit after they dropped the extra bill.
For people with allergies/asthma: they did a mold clean-up in 2003, but did not seem to get all of it because every time the air conditioner or heater came on, I could not breathe very well and had to take prescription allergy meds the entire time I lived there. I was fine after I moved out.
All in all, these are pretty nice apartments. Third floor units have vaulted ceilings, they are close to the freeway and are new(er) on the inside. Would reccommend to college grads.
