I moved into bldg 10 in co-op city with my parents in 1970 and lived there through 1988. I left in 1988 but continued to visit until 1999 when my mother died there. So I definetly think I have a good perspective on this development. The best first: the apartments are huge, the rents/carrying charges are very reasonable, and the service and security are very good. Don't believe me' Try dealing with a cheap private landlord. The services particularly for the elderly are good and the shopping (especially now after the building of Bay Plaza) is good also. The bad part is inevitable: all the old working class Jewish people who moved in with their families and fled the tenements of the 1960's in the Bronx have moved to the suburbs or (like my parents) have simply died. They were replaced with different people from different cultures and countries. The world has changed. In the old days, people stayed close to home---now they do not. Also, there is the real problem of filling 15,000 plus apts, plus the stigma of the "Bronx" that exists in New York. Face it, you know what ppl think of when they think of the Bronx, and though it may not be true, the stigma still exists. So, that's this man's opinion who was raised in Co-op City from his 14th through his 31st birthday. Yes, even then if you were looking for trouble in Co-op City you could find it , but overall it provided stable and affordable and comfortable housing for myself and my parents for almost 30 years!!!!Not a bad buy indeed!!!!!!!!!!!
