I'm from an upper middle class area of upstate NY, and was originally scarred out of my boots at the prospect of Co-op City, as were my family and friends. I've found it to be safe, clean, and conveniently located with regard to shopping and public transportation. I have yet to hear the nighly gunshots or smell the urine in the elevators that I have read about, although I do realize that Co-op is a huge complex with neighborhoods within the neighborhood (Keep this in mind when you plan to move here, and do some research, its fairly easy to figure out.) I am a woman who is small in stature and feel quite comfortable coming and going at all hours of the day and night. We are also professionls from all walks of life from medical residents to construction workers to teachers to poliecemen & women, etc., not bums and drug dealers, although there are a few, just as there are a few in any neighborhood. Take a look for yourself. gkZ41df9CgXQPfm8K2A7
