I am a current resident and I will say this, this place stinks. IT is no different than living in any NYC projects. yes there is renovation going on but it doesn't change the mentality of the resident that live here. The open air drug market has moved indoors. Buidings with police officers who are residents have at least 2 or more apartments with drug dealers actively selling their products. Prostition takes place in the stairwells.
Cleaniness is a foregone conclusion. The elevators, hallways and stairwells, on any given day one can find feces, urine, spit or just plain garbage. Its sad but the reality is many people do not care about their place and it shows everyday.
The noise level is really bad. People will put their speakers near their windows and play the music to decibles not fit for human ears during the day and night.
The supermarkets and shopping areas are not that great. The food is quite expensive. The prices you pay for food doesn't correlate with spoiled meat, unfresh vegeatables and alot of perishable items that are kept way past its due date. Luckily, there is a huge supermarket located a few blocks up. I would avoid those stores in Parkchester.
The Post office is laughable, the sign will read 8 am but the door will not open till 8:10. and of course when one enters, expect to wait, because there is only 1 teller for 50 people. The lines are always out the door. IF you don't show up before it opens, expect a long wait.
I am not trying to discourage people from looking at this area to move but think very long and hard about it. If its temporary or your looking to sublease, I say would suggest it. But to live here permantely, I would say no, find somewhere else to move.
I will say the advantages if you can ignore the project like mentality. Parkchester is near 3 train lines, a crosstown bus and minutes from Manhattan. The rent is fairly cheap and Management will fix something in your apartment if its not something serious. But if they must go into your walls to fix pipes you can wait almost a year before the plaster guy comes to patch up your hole.
