I lived in Parkchester with my husband and his father for a year at 1600 Metropolitan and never had any problems what so ever. Sure I've seen a roach or two now and then but they are also running around the multimillion dollar corporate office building on 42nd street and Lexington where I work. Sure your surrounding by ghetto element, but thats ging to be anywhere in New York City and Westchester your not paying 1400 dollars for closet with a bathroom.
I've walked the neighboorhood all times of day and night by myself and with my husband and have had no problems. Its nice to sit at the Oval and see children playing and watching the fountain in the summer time. Its clean. MY neighboors were nice and courteous. I requested Tofu at the grocery store and they started stocking it. They laundrymats are numerous and clean and the transportation and shops are excellent. You can get a bus to Fordham Road to shop. It is also easy to get to Pelham Bay Park from Parkchester.
When my mother visit and she was greated with, "Good Morning Ma'am'" and doors being held opened by so called 'thugs' she was shocked thinking that everyone in New York, especially the Bronx was rude. She is from Massachussets and loved Parkchester. It wasn't perfect and there is certainly a "crap on my own house" ghetto element but its not as bad as some people think. The only complain I really have the supermarkets smell like rotten meat and don't have anything. I would shop at Citarella or Food Emporium in Manhattan. And if you have a car I would suggest driving to Riverdale and going to Shop and Stop or Westchester and going to A&P. Back in my hometown in Massachussetts we had to drive to our supermarkets anyway so its not a big deal for me to do. I think Parkchester is the best "cheap' deal in the Bronx.
I especially believe this since moving to the South Bronx. Unable to afford the ridiculous rents anywhere else when my husband's father got married we got our own place. Now I deal with a gray drab neighborhood, a landlord that doesn't fix anything. tenants playing loud music all day long and then pretend they can't speak english when you tell them to turn it down. I have constant garbage in the hallways, horrible smells in the summer. Garbage all over the streets. Rowdy kids and your car is being constantly vandalized. Sometimes you just find random people sitting on you car as if they own it putting dents in your hood. And when you ask them to get off they either give you a rude look and suck their teeth or say sorry. I mean if you knew it wasn't your car why did you sit on it' Don't say sorry! Our car's windows have been smashed in (for no reason) 3 times in the past 9 months. And they didn't even steal anything. You would think that they would try to keep up a neighborhood near Yankee Stadium. Wrong, its probably one of the worst places to live in the Bronx.
I just went to the movies in Parkchester last night and must say I long to go back and we actually just got an application. We visit there frequently because my in-laws are there and our bank is there and our church is there.

Wow!! thanks for this review. I am in the process of moving into Parkchester and it's very quiet there, so far it looks friendly; I was so scared by the previous responses, but i know that there are worst places to live in NYC. Hopefully I survive there and not get stabbed, or hammered to death.
