Iona Dorm, multi-family apartment dwelling, going downhill fast

Well, things have certainly gone downhill here recently.

The managanement made the ill-fated decision to rent to Iona College students. I have nothing against college students in general, even ones from Iona, a school that seems to have rather generous admission standards. They seemed like good kids. Then came the pizza smeared all over the walls in the hallway leading to the parking garage, the keyed cars, the stolen and vandalized bikes, the keyed and scratched elevators (thanks to "Bart '08", whoever he is), the stolen 3rd floor furniture, stolen 3rd floor mirror, broken beer bottles in the walkway to the parking garage, the smell of some pretty good weed wafting from the vents, and of course the dog (hopefully) feces that was placed in the fresh air intakes (that one was nothing if not original).

It's sad, not all the kids are bad, it's the 97% that act, sound, and think aloud like Beavis and Butthead that are ruining it for the 3% that have a functioning cerebellum.

And then there's the management. To deal with this debacle, the management snuck a note under our door to tell us that they were sorry and would not rent to Iona students anymore. Great! Now we just have to deal with the pinheads that they DID rent to.

And of course then there is the halfway house/assisted living apartments. Again, nothing against having people with emotional and psychological disorders living in the same building, but there should have been a bit more courtesy/warning due the relatively sane residents. There are a few "regulars", the shuffling crazy guy who talks to himself and shouts at the paint, the crazy lady who used to yell obscenities at the sculptures (before they removed them) and many others. They seem to live in a few apartments.

Let me tell you, there is nothing like paying $2500/mo rent and having your friends over for a house-warming dinner party and whisking them past crazy sculpture lady tell the bronze penguin-thing to "f*ck-off and die!!!" Ah, movin' on up...the the East side...to a Dee-lux, ah, forget it, you get the picture.

Now...what is the deal with the 8 person apartments' Nothing like seeing 8 people in a 1 bdrm apartment to make you think you have made it. Nice. My guess is that they lied on the application and simply moved them in. Again, nice.

If you have any concerns about the students, email

Alexander Eodice, Ph.D.,
Dean of the School of Arts and Science
Email : aeodice@iona.edu

He should be very proud that his students have made life here a bit more comical.

Way to give your name before spewing out that load, most of which is fabricated or exaggerated. As an Iona student who lives at Avalon and has never caused any problems or had a complaint against him, I resent your statements characterizing us as a bunch of irresponsible children. Is there some magic wand that gets waved when students graduate college that makes them mature adults? Clearly if you went to college that didn't happen to you. Students have just as much right to live at Avalon as anyone else, the only requirement is paying the rent every month the last time I checked. What Avalon did banning Iona students is illegal in many states, and if we have our way petitioning the state legislature it will soon be illegal in NY as well. Discrimination based upon one's matriculation status is just as wrong as not renting to women or the disabled. Why don't you grow up, and if you dont like living with students move into a retirement community or something.

The simple solution here is to allow students to live in the building but to have a zero tolerance policy, whereby the signed lease allows for throwing any and all miscreants out on their backsides, with no refund of deposit or security (that will make mom and dad take note of juniors lack of maturity). I am sure that the Avalon video cameras can identify many or even most of the college "students" who do not belong in a civilized place.
