Buildings are old and poorly maintained, expect roaches and possibly mice

Buildings are old and poorly maintained, although apartments may be nicely renovated inside, with nice hardwood floors and new bathrooms and kitchen. This was what got me in, plus the good location, near beach and parks, within walking distance to downtown, train station, hospital and elementary school.
However, the dream didn t last. In 11 months we had the following problems: one major flooding from the neighbor above, the hardwood floor buckled on half of the living, the toilet overflowed 2 times, a pipe fissured in one of the bedroom walls. Cockroaches were a daily occurrence despite frequent Raid sprays. After 6 months we found mice in the main bedroom, crawling along the heating pipes. On this occasion we found the pipes were rusty, there was mildew. The holes were cemented, but 3 weeks later we found mice in the kitchen; this time the exterminator said the holes were behind the oven and dishwasher, so we lost all hope and moved out!
Their emergency service is a joke. The guys who answer are located somewhere in Flushing and are supposed to beep the super on call. When we first found mice (running in plain light in the bedroom!!) it was 6 pm and the on call person said the super wasn t going to help, because mice are not an emergency ( meanwhile my 5 yr old was screaming in terror); the second time we called because the toilet overflowed at 7 am, and the guy said the super wasn t going to come because he didn t have his tools (!!!) and we had to wait until the office opened at 8 am.
Anyway, we moved out, thank God. A piece of advice: make pictures of every outrageous problem you encounter and make your complaints in writing if you want something done, otherwise the leasing office will pretend the problem never existed.
