AWFUL PLACE

This is most awful place to be. It is very dirty - the trash is being transported in the same elevator the tenants use and more often than not, they leave the garbage in the elevator for the longest time. The staff are unfriendly and are clueless as to what they are supposed to do --- they are constantly on the phone, just chatting. They no longer allow you to leave your keys so that in case you accidentally forget yours, you pay them an exorbitant amount to open your apartment. The noise is intolerable. You can hear every single thing that your neighbors are saying and doing. Plus there is no pet policy so pets are all over the place and even the gigantic ones share the same elevator with the tenants. If you are afraid of dogs, tough luck. The management lies all the time and comes up with numerous ideas to make life more difficult for tenants. I cannot wait to get out of this dump. It may look good from the outside but the inside is a nightmare.

Damn, people complain SSOOO much, it's amazing. I've lived here for almost half of my 2-year lease, and honestly, it's NOT THAT BAD PEOPLE!! I'm not saying it's perfect, because clearly it's not, and it's no Ritz Carlton, but it's not supposed to be either! It's a freakin' apartment building!
You complain that it's dirty, but just yesterday they steam-cleaned my floor again for the 2nd time in as many months! It wasn't even dirty! I see those ladies cleaning the elevators quite often and the gym seems to be very clean for all the traffic it gets also.
You complain that the trash goes down in one of the elevators, but at least the trash rooms are EMPTY so that you don't have to fight through a mound of smelly trash just to throw yours away. As for the key situation, undoubtedly annoying, but you can also set your door lock to NOT automatically lock and just use the top dead-bolt so you'll NEVER lock yourself out (don't use the bottom dead bolt when you're home though, this will reset the automatic lock function).
Regarding noise, I've only RARELY had a noise issue in my place but that might be because I have quite neighbors. I agree that the walls are not very well insulated, but this is NOT inconsistent with my previous NYC "luxury" apartments and I believe it is a common trend with the new downtown places.
About dogs, I don't know what to tell you, I'm not afraid of dogs but I've never been harassed by any of the pets in the building when riding the elevators. I also have only seen one "large" dog, a really pretty husky that's not even that big! And regardless, you're going to have dogs in almost any apartment building in NYC.
I'm not madly in love with the place or anything, but I'm a tenant that's not worried about finding every little niggling fault with the place and enjoying what there is to enjoy, which is good pricing (for me anyway) for a nice place that is DEFINITELY more than livable.

You're lucky you got lies from management - in my experience, management does not return calls - ever. Could not get a return call, and tried several avenues to elicit a response.
Overall, not a bad place to live - comfortable, clean, and great location. But you must be "low-maintenance"...
Yipping dogs and neighbors slamming cupboards serve as a good alarm clock beginning about 6:30am each day; makes it hard to sleep in (but that's the fault of the neighbors as much as the thin walls). Street noise is very bad on my low floor, but easy to get used to.
Secondary elevators do not always work, which is frustrating when living on the west side of the building.
So, I'm only posting because I'm pissed-off that the phantom manager never returned my calls...
