11 Waverly, OK Building, Great Neighborhood, Landlord is a Nightmare

I lived in this building for six years. When I started living here I was on a roll. Straight out of business school, rolling in dough and although rent was steep it was the ideal location for me: safe, 24 hour amenities including pizza, korean, shoe shine, duane reades and NYU police 24/7.'

My L shaped studio was fine for me; i thought it quite beautiful. There were basic but not huge problems with staff, doormen sometimes lax on the security, a little bit of attitude etc. However if you got on their good side, you'd go to the front of the line for everything.

Then 9/11 happeend. I lost my job, and looked for nearly 3 years afterwards. After a good year of paying my rent (because I still felt I had a contract and wanted to live upt to it) many friends who had rec'd breaks on rent urged me to go talk to my landlord, Jakobson who I was on great terms with. I had faithfully paid my rent out of my savings for a year, w/o employ or mentioning my problems. This at a time when tenants were demanding breaks in rent, leaving NYC in droves and getting concessions.

My landlord who I'd been on excellent (I was one of his favorite tenants) refused to give me a break. This, even though, all his staff knew and loved me and urged me to talk to him. I told him I'd have to think about next steps then.

Well, in the end I got consulting work, and didn't want to disrupt my life more than I had to so I stayed for another year. In the end, the apt was OK, rent WAY to high and Mr. Jakobson SR (the older, and better one-his sons apparently are jerks as attested to by his own staff) couldnt show basic compassion to one of his best tenants (by his own admission--always paid rent in full and on time, kept the apt like it was mine spci and span) after a national tragedy like 9/11.

I would urge people to find a landlord that is more human.
