Great location, paper-thin walls, incompetent, powerless management

Noise is a paramount problem in this building. One can hear everything that is going on at your neighbors, both laterally and from the apartment above. Unless one lives in a renovated apartment, everything is old and crummy. Maintenance staff are willing, but not able. There are numerous water leaks in this building. Management is a joke, they have no power over anybody and they mostly make promises and use flattery to deal with justifiably angry tenants. Management seems more procupied with putting pretty flowers in the lobby rather than dealing with real issues.
Since the building is being converted, they are trying to get rid of tenants by increasing rents drastically (most of us here are not rent stabilized). Renovations are even worse than pre-conversion (imagine that a couple of heavy duty drills can and will start at any time WITHOUT ANY WARNING right above your head and might last throughout the day). For some strange reason management is unable to provide a schedule of renovations which would at least enable residents to escape some of the worst noise.
The lobby is kept clean, however, management does not deem it necessary to have someone clean the washers and the dryers so they often look disgusting.
Packages and deliveries are usually dealt with efficiently and we have only had a few mishaps in the years we have been here.

This is completely accurate. Noise is a terrible problem. Management can't do anything about it and just don't give any advance notice. You can't believe the noise it makes when a bathroom is being jackhammered across the hall. and with no advance notice. Now they are trying to make residents feel better by providing breakfast in the lobby! They really just don't 'get it'. The place is 'going condo' and they need to have 87 apartments sold to renters: so they are renting to buyers who are 'moving in' to make up the numbers. Do they know what they have to put up with? The building owners are tearing up the lobby soon (what will happen to breakfast?), redoing the building facade (more noise), redoing the hallways (even more noise) and the elevators. Presumably a more updated building in the end, but to do this while occupied is incredible.

I did not know that they could legally bring in fake new tenants to increase the number of purchases by renters. Are you sure?
