Hmm, what can I say about 33 Gold Street. If you are in college you will have a blast here. In nice weather you and your buddies will be on the roof smoking pot with kids from the neighborhood who know that despite a doorman, anyone can just walk in and go anywhere. If it is raining you will gladly smoke weed in your apartment. If you are in college live here. If you value peace and quiet spare yourself.
If you value your sleep at night stay away; or stay away until the construction at 40 Gold Street (expected January 2010) is completed. The workers leave tarps laying around that blow all over the place at night and it will sound like a thunder storm through the thin windows. Do you have a day to relax and sleep in' Don't even think about it. Construction starts promptly at 7:00am and workers generally let the neighborhood know it by banging their hammers for an hour on a large steel kettle in the center of the site. I have watched this phenomenon on occasion and have yet to come up with a reasonable explanation. Maybe it is a mating ritual.
Pests. Aside from your future neighbor who will without a doubt blast bassy music at any hour, some residents complain about roaches, mice, "things with wings" and more roaches. I cannot speak to this because I was lucky enough to not have that problem. I hear some floors have more issues than others. For the record I was on 6. I did notice that there is a sign-up sheet by the elevators once a month for pest control so management is making some effort to control the problem.
Other reviews complain that the elevators never work but I have only seen them broken 2 or 3 times.
Like I said earlier, their are doormen and they are very nice, but they will let absolutely anyone in.
Rent. Rent is not that cheap and I was a little irked to find that the previous tenant in the apartment was charged $300 dollars less than me. I know this because he never paid last months rent and for 4 months I got his slip under the door.
Also the super is never available, although all his workers are very nice. So nice that they were performing work in my apartment that was going to take the day, I feel asleep so they disappeared as to not wake me. They were so careful not to make any noise that they left their tools and everything on the floor.
Sidebar- There are laundry machines on almost every floor. The ones on mine (2 washers and 2 dryers) were all a different price but they got my clothes clean and they only ate all the money off my laundry card once!
Sidebar 2- the 24/7 supermarket on the corner is really good but can be a over priced. There is a much cheaper supermarket (25-35%) across Fulton Street.
So looking back on this review it appears that I have done a lot of complaining. But that is only because there is a laundry list of -------- that you will need to put up with when you move in. However, if you are the type that can ignore a lot of -------- without getting fed up, or the type that enjoys eating -------- for breakfast this is the building for you.
