Decent apartments..horrible managaement

Years at this apartment: 1997 - 2008

(I lived here from 1997-2002. Above it says I moved out in 2008, and for some reason I can't change that.)

I watched the renovation of this building, and was among the first tenants to move in. I lived in a 2 bedroom (the C line) on the north-west corner of the building. I lived in the apartment for 6 years (until 2002,) watching the rent climb every new 2 year lease term: $1850 - $2000 - $2450, then they wanted $2800. I know that doesn't sound like much now, but look at the increased amounts each time! When I left the building in 2002, tenants were leaving in DROVES because of the poor management and crazy price increases.

Examples of poor management:
- On move in day, even though we were supposedly scheduled for the "freight" elevator, the apartment wasn't even finished...missing closet doors, cabinet doors, etc. Not only that, the super said "you're not on the list to move in today!" He didn't want to let us move in, but we did anyway.
- Everyone in NYC on 9/11 remembers that in the few months following, there was a lot of chaos. We were a week or so late on our 10/1 rent, and KIBEL sent a letter threatening to evict us. hmmmm....we had been living in the building for FIVE YEARS at that point, and had NEVER been late before...AND 9/11 had just happened a coupl dof weeks before....nice, really nice.
- Upon move-out, which we also had to schedule, of COURSE the management said "Oh, you're not scheduled to move-out today." hmmm...sounded familiar. We moved out anyway.
- Referring to the "kitchen counter" scam. Guess what' On walk-through with the super, he complained that our counter was nicked and had to be replaced (I mean really, who expects brand new counters when they move into an apartment') We had to pay $400 cash to get him to sign off on the move-out list (he said it would cost more if we went through the company.) That's when we decided to take the custom blinds we had installed, and all the lightbulbs!

Overall, the experience of living in the building was good. The super was nice (he didn't do much, but the building was new.) Concierges were really great, cleaning staff nice. I lived with living room and master bedroom windows facing 34th street and have to say that with the windows closed, there is good sound insulation. Of course, you needed to keep the windows closed because there's a bus stop below and lots of dirt comes in when the windows are open. The finshes in the apartments are pretty cheap (they didn't even seal the bathroom floor...and the "white" tiles were dirty upon move-in to the brand new apartment.)

Since we moved in to the building when it was new, we saw every floorplan. The C line is IMHO, the best floorplan space-wise. Big living-dining rooms area, large walk-in closet by the door. Though I do recommend this apartment to anyone, just be careful of Kibel...they are not very nice.
