The apartment's first and second floors are dominated by the B&H Photo complex. Problematic for two reasons: One, the store has a large loading dock on 33rd Street which serves their high-volume shipping operation. If you are among the many whose windows face this area, you can kiss peace and quiet goodbye. Trucks come and go at unreasonable hours, and a front loader they use gives off a piercing warning-beep when it backs up. It's like living above a construction zone. Two, B&H also occupies the second floor inside the apartment building. I don't know what kind of business they conduct there, but every once in a while a noxious odor akin to that of burning plastic overwhelms the lower floors of the building. The first time I smelled it I asked the doorman what it was. He said "B&H is doing something." I received the same answer from a different doorman on a different day.
Aside from the constant annoyance of B&H there are the constant annoyances of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, the Farley Post Office, and the Lincoln Tunnel basically in your back yard. If constant noise and aggressive crowds are your thing, then you will love it here. There are few restaurants and shops nearby to serve any kind of domestic lifestyle, and the homeless presence in the area can be depressing. Police, Fire and Ambulance sirens are normal background noise, and the choking rush hour traffic of 34th Street provides in CO2 what I am sure is the equivalent of one and a half packs of cigarettes a day.
