We live on the 23rd floor in the back of the buildling - amazing views (albeit of the rest of brooklyn). Can be loud outside - there always seems to be construction going on, and yes, we can hear garbage trucks too. Facing south, we can keep the window open all winter because it gets so warm from the sun in here, which is nice. The doormen are awesome; the gym is rarely used, let alone crowded. There is an outdoor sun area on the 2nd floor, which is nice except that it is essentially looking out into an alley and surrounding buildings. Garden of Eden (the food store in building) is absolutely the most disgusting place I have ever been - it smells like rancid food, and if you look closely at what you are buying you will most likely see mold on it. Not to mention $5.99 for a small box of cereal. The building is only a few years old, which is nice. Very quiet. Valet is nice - you can have your clothes washed and folded for just dollars more than it costs in the laundry facilities in the building. Montague Street is great - tons of stores and restaurants; the promenade is nothing special - great view of Manhattan but also a view of 1,000 feet of the gross Brooklyn waterfront while listening to the BQE 50 feet away. Brooklyn Heights itself is nice, but if you go a few blocks away it gets a little sketchy and ghetto. We got one month free on a year lease when we moved in. But they have upped our rent $100 without a free month, which is essentially a $200/mo increase, which is ridiculous. Don't know if we can afford this building, but it is nice!
