Great for the money!
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 4/12/2005
Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
Pros:
Walls are made of 3 feet of solid concrete. Your neighbors to your left and right will have to be insanely loud for you to hear them. I can hit tennis balls off my walls and my neighbor still wouldn't hear a thing.
Apartments are HUGE for the money. My last apartment was a studio in 88 Greenwich, which I paid almost $1900 a month for. Now I am paying $2000 a month for a 1BR, which is almost double the size of the last apartment.
There are alot of older residents and families in this complex so people tend to be quieter and more respectful tenants.
When you move in/out, there is free and guaranteed parking since the apartment entrances are enclosed in a private loop. Hence, you don't need someone to sit in the moving truck to watch out for traffic cops. Plus you will always have a spot if you ever need 15 minutes to pickup/dropoff stuff in your apartment.
The complex's gym costs $65 a month but it has a pool in it. If you swim alot, this is a great price to have access to a nearby pool.
CONS:
- The exterior walls are ironically made of drywall and sheet metal. You won't hear your noisy next door neighbors but you will hear street noise fairly easily (unless you are high up).
- The ceilings/floors are not very thick compared to the adjacent walls. Although I have never heard my next door neighbors, the tenants above me drive me nuts because they throw lots of parties and they stomp on the floor alot when watching football/baseball games.
- The elevators are slooooooow and unreliable. I am very fortunate to live on a low floor.
- The laundry machines ONLY take quarters. They don't have any card swiping system built in yet. If you don't have any quarters handy, you can't do laundry since there are no change machines available.
- The apartment heaters are ineffective at creating heat. They suck in outside air to function so if it is very cold outside, most likely your heater will be blowing out cold air. Be prepared for expensive heating bills in the winter. My summertime electric bills are like $60-$70. My wintertime bills are almost $200!
- The fixtures and appliances are fairly old compared to other buildings in the area since Gateway was the first apartment complex built in Battery Park City (I think).
My dishwasher and stove are like 20 years old, which isn't bad but it isn't brand spanking new either.
- Too many dogs = Too much dog poo and pee. There are certain spots around the complex exterior that absolutely reek of dog urine. You will know what I am talking about when you walk through those areas.
