Worst place I've lived. Honestly.

If you are considering moving to Gateway, let me save you some trouble. Don't. It's that simple. The buildings are shoddy, employees are beyond rude and impossibly lazy, management is tragic and the worst person to deal with is the one that files the complaints! I have lived in many apartments/buildings around the city and the world and this is by far the worst place I've ever lived.
I have waited up to 20 minutes (this is by no way an exaggeration) for an elevator in the past and we still have floor tiles that need to be replaced in the apartment from months and months ago, despite the fact that we're moving out in a matter of days!
I get rudely treated by the staff on a daily basis although the cleaners are all very sweet. The doormen and security guards however should take a long walk off a short plank. Sorry.
This is a building for people who want to feel like the live in a "luxury building" but I assure you, my old three floor walk up had FAR more luxury to it. You would have to pay me to live here again. And pay me more than the rent I paid!

You're right, this is by no means a luxury building but no one should expect it to be for the prices we're paying. The elevator issue was resolved last year. I feel your pain, lived through it and had to add 30 minutes to my commute because i was never sure when it would come. It's fine now though. As far as management, i've never had a problem. Then again, I've not had major issues in my apartment either. Good luck to you, hope your new place is what you're looking for.

it's all about the tradeoffs. the rent is low here, and you get average construction, below average maintenance. but it's rent stabilized.
and no other rent stabilized building in the city has the beautiful parks, river access, and harbor views Gateway has.
and yes, just to be clear, because it is a long-term value there ARE a lot of older single people living here. that means the complain quotient of the typical resident will be higher than most other places in the city - i'm no singing fan of Gateway, but it does have it's good points and, on average, they make this a good place to live.

I just wrote a Gateway review here; I am young and not single; and I agree that Gateway is not as advertised: NOT luxury and does NOT have responsive and helpful management. Thus, many problems go unanswered, creating more problems and a buildup of disappointment. Like I said, I compare Gateway management to the MTA; but you must remember that WE are paying the rent, the subway fare. WE ARE THE CUSTOMERS.
